Nature Or Nurture : What Influences Your Career Choice More?
Is our career choice influenced more by genetics or by environment
? This is an ongoing debate among scientists and social engineers of all stripes.
Those who favour nature will say that the hardware exists at birth, so your height, weight, natural gifts will determine your career. Those who favour nurture say that you can do anything you want in life if you work hard enough.
In the woof and warp of everyday life, there seems to be a complex interplay between the two, between the hardware and the software.
On the one hand, there is a good deal of evidence now that a lot of the hard wiring is present at birth. We are born with certain talents, inclinations, and predispositions. For example, twins separated at birth, and later reunited after living in entirely different social circumstancesperhaps one rich, the other poorstill exhibit the same behavioral characteristics due to their genetics.
On the other hand, we arent born into a vacuum. We are social beings, and we are clearly influenced by the people, places, and problems that surround us as children. Parents are often astounded by the differences in their children, even though they share the same DNA of mother and father. Clearly, our environment plays a role. For example, how we use our talents is strongly influenced by the values and priorities of our family of origin.
Everyone has talents, everyone, but each individual has to make a decision to dscover and deploy their talents into a career. Think of individuals youve known with a natural talent for working with their hands to design, build, repair or restore things using tools, equipment, or machinery. However, their parents considered this blue collar work an unworthy ambition.
Rather than nurture and develop their natural inclinations, many parents encourage their gifted children to eschew their natural inclinations in favour of scholarly education that will lead to cerebral and sedentary careers as knowledge workers working with intangible subject matter such as ideas, concepts, theories, thoughts, expressions.
Or, as individuals, we sometimes internalize our parents values and priorities and [independentlyor so we think] make a career decision to push aside our passion for working with our hands because of a specific attitude, belief, or idea we have about success, and choose a career that aligns with those ideas rather than our natural strengths.
Even if all the wiring is present at birth, the key to success in life seems to be finding out what turns it on. Having a certain skill or knowledge often predicts what we CAN do but not what we WILL do. Both nature and nurture are present in our career choices. Our lives are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Hardware and software guide our career path. Career success is dependent to some extent on understanding how both operate in your life.
