Nature Trail In Negombo- Exploring A Unique Ecosystem In Negombo

Negombo is a seaside town located about an hour and half's drive from the capital Colombo

, it is popular among travelers for the laid back lifestyle, the beach resorts and also its eclectic collection of bars and pubs. Being located towards the north of the capital and within close proximity of the international airport, the town of Negombo is the ideal first stop for visitors entering Sri Lanka. There are many things to see and do in Negombo, among them is visiting the many Catholic churches that are to be found here, in fact the large number of these places of worship have given the town its nickname-Little Rome. Historically Negombo used to be home to Moors who settled down in Sri Lanka in the 7th century and played an important role in the export of cinnamon. However in the 16th century with the Portuguese invasion of the coastal belt, many of the Moors were ousted from the town and a military fort was built. The subsequent years were extremely turbulent and saw continued fighting between the Portuguese, the Dutch and the native Sinhalese to lay claim to the town.

Apart from the historical significance of the town, it is important for travelers as it lies close to a unique eco-system known as the Muthurajawela Marsh Lands. This unique ecosystem features large mangroves interspersed with natural salt water waterways. The unique habitat is home to the notorious salt water crocodile and several other reptiles most of whom are endemic to the region.

A rich variety of birds can also be found here, most of them feed on the fruits of the mangroves and have sported evolutionary adaptations in order to accomplish this more effectively. Commonly seen species are Purple Heron, Little Cormorants and Spot Billed Pelicans.
