Necessities For Your First Apartment

You have finally made it out of your parent's house

. Congratulations, you are now officially an adult. You are probably a bit nervous having left the comfort of home and dorm life behind. This move, while exciting, comes with some anxiety. Relax, with a few well chosen accessories your place will become the go-to hangout for all your friends.

First, do the boring part, the part that ensures your safety. Check the batteries on your smoke alarms and either locate the fire extinguisher or go out and buy one.

Speaking of safety, Carbon Monoxide (CO2) poisoning can kill. Be sure you have a CO2 monitor and that it is plugged in and working. Inoperable safety devices defeat their purpose entirely.

Next on the list is your privacy. Get some window treatments, something to block the prying eyes of your neighbors. They don't want to watch you vacuuming the floor in your tight-whiteys, just as you probably don't want them to either. Do them and yourself a favor and part with a few bucks for curtains or blinds.

Now that you have your privacy, you can take a shower. You will need a towel to dry off, of course. You will also need hand towels for you and your guests.

Towels for the kitchen are essential. A garage full of paper towels only lasts so long. But a good stack of dishtowels can last you a lifetime. Cheap, reusable, and decorative, dishtowels will save you money in the long run.

You do not want to have to rent a plow to cut a path through the dirty clothes lying all over your apartment. You need a stand up collapsible clothes hamper that can be wheeled from room to room and out the door to the laundry room. When the laundry is done and your clothes are put away, you can fold up your hamper, put it away also and give yourself some more precious floor space.

Throw pillows are not just for decoration anymore. Get your self some supersized pillows and use them for extra seating. Should one of your guests find themselves too hammered to drive home, put two pillows on the floor and they can safely spend the night in reasonable comfort.

As for kitchen appliances, don't buy what you will never use. Come on, will you really be making gruyere fondue, paninis or Belgian waffles? I don't think so. You do not need specialized cooking appliances. All you need is a microwave, a toaster oven and crock pot.

Your apartment will get dirty. The correct cleaning products for the job will save you cash and time. In your cleaning bucket of tricks you should have:

-Dish soap

-All purpose, preferably antibacterial cleaner in as big a jug as you can find

-Scrubbing compound

-Microfiber cloths

-Sponges

-Empty 1 liter spray bottles

That should do it for the kitchen and bathroom. The floors will need a Swiffer. For the floors you must also have a broom, dustpan and vacuum cleaner to take the spills and dirt away.

Even in warm weather a coat rack is a good thing to have. You can hang your keys, handbag, backpack, bikini and any thing you want to return to the store on it and save a bunch of floor space. Hey! You many even have room for a table and chairs.

Table space is at a premium these days. If your enjoy sharing dinner with friends and not the TV, you might want a kitchen table for your common area. Depending on your priorities, a coffee table may be more suited to your needs. You know, in case you need to put the chips somewhere.

Now that you are organized, invite those envious friends over and show them what you have accomplished with your new space. Maybe you should add a blender after all to your kitchen needs for those prize-winning Margaritas you are famous for. Yup, your friends will be green with envy.
