Needs And Wants

The other night I was listening to a radio talk show

. The host was interviewing a famous Hollywood matchmaker who exclusively dealt with the rich and the beautiful. The host asked the master matchmaker the following question: "What is the single most important thing you tell your clients?" Great question she replied, "I tell all my clients the same thing - Take a good hard look in the mirror and ask yourself: what is it that you truly need from the other? What is it that you lack and the other can complete?"

The matchmaker went on to say "too many people fall in love these days with an idea, an image of what they think they want. Very often this is just a fantasy created by the media. The two went on to discuss this at length having determined that they had found the master key to martial bliss.

This brings to mind a famous short story written by O'Henry. The story features a newly married young couple. They are very poor, but happy as they are very much in love. Christmas is approaching and they have no money to buy each other gifts. The young woman has the most beautiful long flaxen hair.

The young man passes by a shop-window where he sees the most beautiful comb. Having no other way to pay for it, he pawns his most prized possession, his pocket watch, and purchases the comb.

In the meantime the young woman passes by a shop-window on another street. In the window she sees the most beautiful gold watch chain. Having no other way to pay it, for she has her hair cut and sells it. With the money purchase the chain.

We all have a favourite aunt. Mine is Aunt Klari. When asked the question, "What is love?", she gave the following reply: Love is like two birds flying together. As one soars higher, it beckons the other to join. Then the other does the same in turn. In this way they coax each other higher and higher as they ascend towards the sun.

Love is not reciprocal. Love is not a contract. Love is when you place the happiness of the other ahead of your own. When two people do this they need no matchmaker to find love, when they do not - all the matchmakers in the world cannot help them!
