Any successful network marketing professional will tell you that their success hinges on their downline

. Yes, they make money off of their sales, and generating a solid customer base is the most important aspect of network marketing. After all, there would be no business without customers. But the real money and opportunity for advancement and a bigger paycheck comes from building, maintaining and growing a healthy network downline.

Building a downline in network marketing is a challenge at first. Most everyone goes through the same headaches and heartaches in the beginning of their business. You go through your initial list of friends and family and then suddenly your well has run dry. You can only reach out to your mother's second cousin's aunt so many times before you come to the conclusion that you have to reach out and expand your network. Some people get hung up on this and simply drop out of their program before they even try to build a solid foundation.

Your mentor will probably urge you to start building your downline from the beginning. Jump in whole hog. But a better approach for people who have never been in sales before, is to work on selling your product first. This is only putting off the inevitable, but taking a few months and devoting yourself entirely to the sale of product will benefit you later when you are ready to expand and build your network downline.

In network marketing, a downline is built on sales. You will be selling people on your opportunity. So why not practice selling on something less personal? The product. Work with as many techniques as you are comfortable trying on. Lean to ask for the sale. Learn good follow up techniques. Keep your customers coming back for more. After all, a good customer who believes in your product and who sees your success bud before their eyes is a great downline candidate later on.


Using your customer base is also a great way to dip your toe into recruiting and building your downline in a network marketing situation. You can use your sale calls for product as a way to slowly introduce a customer to your opportunity. The more comfortable you are with customers, the more comfortable you'll be when presenting your opportunity to new people, and confidence is a key component to closing a sale.

Building your network marketing downline is a must. You can't put it off forever. But newbies can increase their chances for success by learning good, strong sales techniques their first year as they focus on the sale of their product.
