Technology has changed the way we work. In fact, the world relies heavily on internet applications and network systems that are growing increasingly complex. This is because there are many more protocols, functions, languages, and capabilities than ever before. More importantly, the amount of traffic and data being pushed across the networks have increased many times.
Because of this, detecting weaknesses or network problems can take a long time for even the most qualified staff. What's more, malicious software and network hackers are using more angles than ever before to get a hold of vulnerable areas in the network. This can lead to server outages or worse. Unfortunately, such attacks have been able to disrupt even the largest corporation's networks and web applications.
Experts in the server and networking field know that realistic emulation and good testing are key to preventing network outages and web application failures. What a lot of businesses don't know is most network issues can be prevented with the appropriate testing, know-how and equipment.
If it weren't for the attacks, there are normal network problems that need to be monitored and addressed daily such as server overload, server delays, application slow down, and traffic increases. Even the larger corporations are not immune to these kind of network issues, but now there are new solutions that are already making life easier for network and server administrators.
To help business owners, network administrators and technicians sort out the different pros and cons to each product, we have decided to purchase some of the best equipment in the industry and give a public review. The products we are looking at come from Ixia and Spirent.
Ixia specializes in Converged IP Performance Testing with clients in over 30 countries including Network and Communication Corporations, Electronics Manufacturers, Governments, and Enterprises.
Spirent Communications is a British Telecommunications company dealing in communications and network testing.
We got a hold of a number of products from Ixia and Spirent, namely the IxChariot, IxLoad, Ix Test Conductor, and Spirent Avalanche.
IxChariot is known as the world's foremost testing tool for simulating real-world applications to predict equipment and network performance under conditions that closely mimic the real world. It simulates hundreds of protocols and conditions on wired and wireless infrastructures
IxLoad is a testing solution for converged multiplay services and application delivery platforms.
Ixia Test Conductor is an automation framework for IP network testing teams. Because it's easy to pick up, most technicians are up and running in no time. The Test Conductor system comes fully equipped with test authoring, resource management, regression, scheduling and trend analysis.
The Spirent Avalanche 3100 provides 10Gbps capacity, with performance and security testing for network infrastructure and web application services.
We spent a few days testing live servers and networks with the various flavors of equipment supplied by these two companies. We took the time to rigorously test each system and rate them based on our extensive experience in the networking field.
In the end, both products did the job, however, the systems from Ixia tested more reliably than Spirent's devices. When comparing prices, Ixia came out on top as well, being significantly better priced than Spirent. Beyond pricing and reliability, we feel that customer support is one of the most important factors to a good product, because after all these products are intended to be used in mission critical applications. When we had a question for an Ixia support person, we didn't have any problems getting a hold of them, and we were able to solve our problems quickly. However when a similar problem came up with the Spirent equipment, we were not able to get a hold of the right technicians at Spirent for quite some time, and trying to get a proper solution turned out to be more hassle than it was worth.
To sum things up, we feel most server technicians and netowrk administrators would end up having less hassles by switching to Ixia. You can't go wrong when large enterprises and governments rely on Ixia to get the job done. Not only will the admins benefit, but the companies will be more profitable because of the lower priced solutions offered at Ixia. We give Ixia our heartfelt applause for building quality products that still have amazing support when you need it.
