Networking Training: Sharing Printers On Windows

If you intend to train in Networking, you will need to know how to set up a basic printer network

. This training is vital as most businesses use networks for printers and other external accessories.

Most businesses will use this type of network as it saves money. After all, you dont want to purchase a printer for each computer its a waste of electricity and money. Using one lowers costs and leaves plenty of office space free.

If all your computers are using the same version of Windows, the task of networking a printer becomes so much easier. For instance on Windows 7, navigate to the main/start menu and click on the Devices and Printers tab, which should be located on the right hand side. Next click on the printers you want to share using a right click. Printer properties should appear as a menu, then click on the sharing tab on the top panel. After this click on the share this printer box, and windows should do the rest for you. You can also rename the printers name if you have multiple printers and dont want to get them confused, as well as make it run more efficiently over the network by clicking the Render print jobs on client computers box.

All of the computers should automatically recognise the printer as a shared printer as long as they are all using Windows 7, the printer is on and that they are all networked in the same homegroup. If it does not work, these are the issues you will need to look at first.

On a network with different Operating systems or homegroups, it is a little more difficult to complete this task. Look through manuals or on the internet for more information. You may need to download a few new drivers in order to use the new hardware.

Windows usually has an install Wizard, which should give you the option to install a printer over cable or a shared network. Usually just follow the instructions and insert any required information. It works usually by letting you search over the network for shared printers, which then can be turn added to your printer options.

A training course will go through the basic networking procedures, such as the above as well as other type of printer networking, including wireless. You will be also expected to understand other procedures and knowledge that comes with networking, including security.
