New Passport Application Forms Available

On March 1st, 2011, the US Department of State released new, updated passport application forms. Most of the changes are minor, but there are a couple of significant differences.

First, the new forms are designed to be easier to use for modern families. The old forms simply asked for the name of the applicant's "mother" and "father." That's fine for most families, but it's confusing if you're in a household headed by same-sex parents, or in some cases where the parents had to use assisted reproductive technology to conceive.

So, the new forms now ask for "Mother or Parent 1" and "Father or Parent 2." If your family includes two mothers or two fathers, it's clear how you should fill the application out and there's no longer a need to cross anything out on the form to make it applicable to your situation.

Another major change is in the number of passport photos required. Prior to the release of the new forms, you had to send in two identical passport photos with your application. Now, the Department of State only requires that you send one photo. The photo does still need to meet the State Department's guidelines, however. Locations that take passport photos should be familiar with these requirements, but make sure to read over them if you want to do it yourself.

The new passport application forms are now available on the Department of State's website. You can either download them, print them and fill them out by hand or you can fill the form out online and print it. The latter option is preferable as it reduces the chance of the Department of State rejecting your application for being illegible.

One caution: when you apply for a passport at a passport acceptance facility like a post office, you may be offered the old forms as the offices attempt to use up the leftovers. If you choose to use the old form, your application could be significantly delayed, even beyond the standard 6 week time frame. The offices will also have the new passport forms available, and you should use the new forms if you need your passport application processed in a timely manner.
