New Phenomenon With Electric Car Owners
Before the major carmakers ventured into building all electric cars for their showrooms
, the science of electric cars was the domain of the do-it-yourself enthusiasts. What these backyard engineers would do is convert their internal combustion engine cars into all electric cars using existing technologies available to them and their wallets.
Now a group of electric car enthusiasts have taken their backyard hobby to the next level by holding a drag race featuring electric cars. Last September 23, 2011, the first Electric Vehicle Conversion Convention was held at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport in Missouri.
The group consists of about one hundred fifty members from the United States and other countries, who have taken out their internal combustion engines and replaced it with electric motors and a battery pack. Participants ranged from an all-electric Ford Ranger pick up truck to a converted Porsche and a custom built electric car.
The highlight of the affair was the very first drag race between electric cars. The races were held at the east ramp and taxiways of the Cape Girardeau Airport, which remained open to traffic during the event.
This is a new phenomenon for electric car enthusiasts, especially in the Midwest. While many other highly urbanized cities such as New York and San Francisco have their own annual events, people from this region of the United States do not have a venue to showcase their work for all to see.
One of the biggest is the "Green Grand Prix" in New York and one frequent participant in that event is Kevin Smith of Illuminati Motor Works of Springfield, Ill. Now, he says, going to New York would be too expensive and having a similar event would be welcomed by enthusiasts like him living in this part of the country.
He owns the only custom built electric car to Missouri, a gull wing doored car with rear facing passenger seats. He traveled from his home state of Illinois to Missouri, a distance of nearly 200 miles, on one single charge. His custom built car has a 207-mile per gallon equivalent rating from the Environmental Protection Agency and according to him has a top speed of 130 miles per hour.
There were two public events in conjunction with the convention and these were the electric drag racing and auto cross competitions. Nearly fifty electric cars were on display at Capaha Park that then proceeded to a procession of the vehicles down the main streets of the town.
