New Physics For Golf Balls

The American Physical Society's division of fluid dynamics is reporting research

that may soon give avid golfers another way to improve their game.

The scientists are using the same sort of scientific approach commonly used to improve the design of cars, aircraft, ships, trains and other moving objects. The team has used a supercomputer to model how air flows around a ball in flight and to study how this flow is influenced by the ball's dimples. Their aim is to make a better golf ball by optimizing the size and the pattern of these dimples and lowering the drag golf balls encounter as they fly through the air.

Dimples improve the flight of a golf ball. When the ball is in flight a golf ball experiences aerodynamic forces generated from the surrounding air flow as well as gravity. Gravity pulls the ball toward the ground while the drag force dictates the distance it travels. The main purpose of the dimples is to reduce the drag and help the ball fly farther.

There are regulations with the design of golf balls laying out uniform size and weight specifications that all golf balls must meet. Dimple patterns are not regulated and are one of the very few parts of the ball which companies have freedom to change the design.

In the past many companies have used their dimple patterns by simple trial and error. However the new study takes a different approach, asking how to design dimple size and pattern based on mathematical equations that model the physics of a golf ball in flight.

After all the testing they produced a model that reveals the physics of a flying golf ball with the greatest level of detail ever seen. The first step is achieving the projects long term goal of optimizing dimple design to realize the lowest drag possible. The next step is to extend the work by comparing different dimple designs.

New designs are still years away at best, however, so don't give up the driving range just yet.

Nike One Vapour

Nike have are taking over the ball market not just with the Nike One Tour, Nike One Tour D but with a new ball: Nike One Vapour. The ball is aimed at golfers how have a swing speed or around 90mph. They offer the same benefits of a tour level ball however with added length, feel and durability. It features a 70 compression Progressive Density Core which maximises distance from average swing speeds of 90mph.

The Nike One Vapour's Power Transfer Layer maximises speed, distance and control from every club. The cover is made from a soft ionomer blend and has 336 dimples. This gives the ball control and consistency. The balls have been priced to be pocket friendly and is Nike's high performance alternative to their tour level products.
