New Quad Lift at Arapahoe Basin

Construction continues on the new detachable quad chairlift at Arapahoe Basin

. It will be available for the 2010/2011 season. While naming this chairlift, A-Basin bypassed some of the local favorite names, like "Quadzilla" and "Chairlift to Heaven", and went with the more traditional "Black Mountain Express".

The new quad lift replaces the Exhibition Lift, a slower fixed-grip triple chair. The new lift will have a capacity of 2,000 skiers/boarders per hour and take a mere three minutes to get to Black Mountain Lodge at mid mountain. This is half the time of the Exhibition lift, plus it can haul four people at a time as opposed to the three that the Exhibition lift could seat.

This should relieve what has been a bottleneck at the Exhibition lift, the main lift hauling skiers and boarders from the base to Black Mountain Lodge at mid mountain. The bottleneck was caused in part to the capacity limitations of the Exhibition lift and partly to the fact that the lift had to be stopped or slowed down quite often to accommodate beginners. The new Black Mountain Express lift is detachable, so the speed of the chair for loading and unloading will be much slower than the Exhibition lift. This should cut down greatly on the number of times the lift will have to be stopped for a fallen skier.

The slower loading and unloading speeds of a detachable lift make it easier to use this lift for other purposes. A-Basin hosts a series of dinners at Black Mountain Lodge. The diners ride the lift up and snowshoe down. With the slower loading and unloading speeds, the lift can run at full speed instead of having to slow down for riders on their feet. This also makes it easier to use the lift for summer activities like mountain biking, weddings, and other events at the Black Mountain Lodge.
