New Tools To Manage Diabetes
The daily regimen of a diabetic is pricking, placing a blood drop on a testing strip
, putting the strip in a glucose monitor and looking at the reading. Depending on the reading, insulin may be needed or food ingested to increase blood sugar.
This process may soon be part of history with the new technologies that are coming up in the horizon. Leading the charge are continuous glucose monitors, some of which are as follows:
The GlucoWatch. This is a glucose monitoring system attached to the body like a wristwatch. The fluids on the skin are measured through the wrist attachment to give a reading of blood glucose levels underneath. The device though could not provide an accurate measure since fluids on the skin, be it produced by the body or not, was measured but not as accurately as required by diabetic users.
The Continuous Glucose Monitor. In this system, a disposable needle like sensor is inserted under the skin of the abdomen. The sensor would measure glucose levels in tissue fluid, not actual blood. Every five minutes, the sensor sends data to a monitor every five minutes, giving the diabetic ample time to act on changing glucose levels swiftly. This quick monitoring system can prevent complications from arising in real time.
The CGM- Insulin Pump Combination System. In this system, there is a continuous monitoring system of blood glucose levels and a delivery system that is readily available for the patient to inject insulin into the body. This though still relies on the judgment of the diabetic as to the amount of insulin to be injected at any time. While prone to error, it provides the diabetic an available system to correct any sudden changes in blood glucose levels.
The Artificial Pancreas. This is a fully automated system that monitors and delivers insulin as needed by the diabetic. In a normal person, the pancreas releases insulin as needed by the blood sugar levels currently in the body. This is an autonomic bodily function. With an artificial pancreas, the glucose monitoring system does the job of the ailing pancreas by monitoring the blood sugar levels and then releasing the correct dosage of artificial insulin to maintain safe levels in the bloodstream. Software can make all this decision-making possible as well as recording the levels of the blood sugar in the body at any given time.
The Insulin Management System. The pump is a compact system that is able to deliver insulin as needed. It is about the size of a small matchbox toy car, it is worn by the diabetic directly on the skin. The insulin is delivered directly to the skin using a remote control system under the direction of the diabetic. This system of delivering insulin is expected to be grow smaller as the technology improves in time.
