New Toyota Avalon Review (2012 Or 2013)

The Avalon-An Introduction

The Avalon-An Introduction

For several years, full sized sedans have been inherently associated with the emerging American landscape. However, not all models have managed to stand the test of time. Among those that have succeeded in making a mark, the 2012 Toyota Avalon is certainly a prestigious choice. Deputing almost 7 years back in 2005, the Camry Avalon happens to be one of the oldest sedan models from the house of Toyota, although it was subjected to a major design overhaul in 2011.

The features, however, still remain pretty likeable. Prominent ones include excellent visibility, an ultra-spacious cabin and of course a comfortable and refined ride. Besides, the Avalon has also preserved its gargantuan sedan look by providing a big backseat coupled with seatbacks and standard recliners, plenty of headroom and power driven rear sunshades.

Unlike the past however, the Avalon today needs to counter tough competition from the truly impressive Chrysler 300, the up-market Hyundai Genesis, the technologically advanced Ford Genesis, and the ultra-stylish Buick LaCrosse. Besides, the base price of the 2012 Avalon has been pegged about $3,000 to $7,000 higher than the price points put forth by most of its competitors. Although this might account for a disadvantage of sorts, there could be a barrage of other reasons for considering the 2012 Avalon over others.

Trim Levels, Body Styles and Options

The base model of the 2012 Avalon includes standard features like fog lights, 17 inch diameter alloy wheels, sunroof, auto-dimming driver, rear view and heated mirrors, automatic headlamps, double zone automatic climate control, cruise control, a tilting and telescoping steering wheel, a power driver seat, recline feature on the rear seats with leather upholstery, camera for rearview that is mounted atop the rearview mirror, audio as well as Bluetooth connectivity coupled with a satellite radio feature and an auxiliary audio jack along with an iPod and USB interface.

Besides, the standard model also comes with a nine speaker audio surround system with a six CD changer. Some of the limited features like the sound system upgrade along with the heated seats would be available on the base model as well. However, a touch screen navigation system that gets activated by touch would be optional for both the trims.

The limited edition comes with certain additional features along with the ones already provided in the standard model. These include the automatic wipers, the xenon headlights, keyless entry and keyless ignition, additional power driven sear adjustment facilities for the driver seat, power driven passenger seats, ventilated and heated front seats, power driven rear sunshades, driver memory functions along with 12 speaker surround sound system.

Performance and Powertrains

Comprehensive testing has proved that the Avalon is capable of accelerating to a speed of 60mph in about 6.8 seconds flat! This is reasonably impressive for a large sized sedan like this one. According to the estimates for fuel mileage carried out by the EPA, the figure stands at 19 mpg per 28 mpg for highway drives and 23 mpg for combined drives. Therefore, this makes it one of the most fuel efficient cars in the modern day sedan segment. The 2012 Toyota Avalon has a front wheel drives thats powered by a 3.5 liter, V6 engine that delivers 268 Hp and a torque of 248 pounds. The six speed automatic transmission is a standard feature.

Safety Features

The Toyota Avalon 2012 includes a plethora of safety features like the traction and stability control, antilocking disc brakes, side airbags attached to the front seats, active front head restraints, air bags on the side curtains and another airbag near the driver side knee. The vehicle delivers above average performance in speed control as well, making it a safer option among sedans in this category. According to the report card issued by the Insurance Institute, the Avalon 2012 was termed to be Good on Highway Safety Testing parameters that include protection of passengers in side impact and frontal offsets. The Avalon also scores well in roof strength tests.

Special Features and Interior Design

The usage of high quality stuff coupled with an ergonomic and attractive control layout ensures that the interiors of this classy sedan are indeed inviting and upscale. The luxury is emphasized with the aid of metallic accents and standard wood finishes that adorn the interior. This makes the Avalon strikingly similar to the upscale Lexus.

The front seats are wide enough to be comfortable and accommodating and limited editions offer well ventilated and heated seats coupled with a length adjuster for the seat cushions. The rear seats are also equally comfortable. Abundant leg room and the recline feature on the seats allow passengers to stretch out during long travels. Moreover, the rear seat could comfortably accommodate three adults in case you wish to use it for carpooling.

The only point of annoyance could be because of the fact that the rear seats cannot be folded. The trunk is also relatively smaller as compared to other similar sized sedans and measures 14.4 cubic feet in volume.

The Toyota Avalon 2012Final Impressions

Keeping in mind all its positives, considerations and improvement areas, the 2012 Toyota Avalon appears to be the best when driven on open highways. The V6 engines offer ample passing power for a silky smooth ride. However, The Avalon would not be suited for a purely athletic performance. Therefore, drivers who wish to savor a more involved kind of driving experience must consider a Chrysler 300 or a Buick Lacrosse instead. And although the sound production isnt loud enough to disturb you, the Avalon would be far from quiet especially when running on top highway speeds.
