New Windows? Get The Right Dimensions
Old, single-pane glass can drain energy from your home faster than you can pay the meter
. You really should consider replacing the windows with energy-efficient, double-pane glass. But that's a big investment. Rather than replace entire windows, many times you can simply buy replacement glass to pop into the old frames.
If you are doing the job yourself, and it usually is not too difficult, the first step is learning how to measure for replacement windows.
What's the difference?
Remember, replacement windows are different from buying new full-frame windows. Replacement windows use your old frame, and you just plop a nice unit of double-pane glass into the frame. Full-frame windows come with the whole shebang: double-pane glass that is all tidily framed. They are meant to go into the rough-framed window opening and require much more deconstruction. You measure for replacement windows differently than for new windows, but fortunately replacement windows are only a little more complicated.
Your old window frames will tell you if you can get by with replacement windows, or if you need to go the added expense of full-frame windows. If your old window frames show signs of rotting or cracking, you may need new full-frame windows. If the frames are solid, you may be able to get by with just replacement windows.
Measuring Properly
How to measure for replacement windows? The key is multiple measurements. For the width of your replacement window, you measure from jamb to jamb in three places: top, middle and bottom. Use the narrowest measurement.
Same with the height of the window: measure the left, center and right, using the smallest of the distances. Next, you should measure the diagonals to make sure the frames are square. If the distance from the upper left corner to the lower right corner equals the distance of the opposing corners, your frame is square.
Questions?
If you have any doubt about how to measure for replacement windows, talk to your window supplier. Maybe even show him or her photos to make sure you are measuring correctly. You need accurate measurements, because there's no returning your custom replacement windows.
