Nfl- Colts Tame The Broncos And Make History
The Indianapolis Colts kept their unbeaten record intact and did it with class
. They also broke a number of records in the NFL after the end of the fourteenth week of the season. Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning had a brilliant start and then slowed down at the middle, but fortunately, picked up again at the end. Despite that, the Colts beat the Broncos 28-16 in Denver's hometown to get their 22nd consecutive victory in the regular season and their 13th win in this campaign.
With this win, the Colts broke the regular season winning streak record that the New England Patriots imposed last year. The Colts, along with the Saints, became one of the seven teams in NFL history to tie the record of 13-0.
The Colts started the first quarter by scoring 14 points right out of the gate, thanks to two touchdown passes by Peyton Manning. The first one was sent to Austin Collie in a 5 yard-touchdown and the second one was sent to Dallas Clark in a 10-yard touchdown to bring the score to 14-0.
In the second quarter, Clark himself scored in a one yard pass by Manning to put the score 21-0. However, before halftime the Broncos broke the shutout thanks to a 5-yard touchdown pass by Kyle Orton to Brandon Marshall, to end the quarter 21-7.
During the third quarter, none of the teams could score. After a brilliant start, Manning couldn't seem to connect, but the defense held it together for him.
In the final quarter, Denver closed the score to within 5 points, thanks to a 28 yard field goal by Matt Pratter and then another scoring 5 yard pass by Orton to Marshall again, putting the score at 21-16. Nevertheless, Indy clinched the victory with another passing combination between Manning and Clark, in a one yard touchdown. The Colts ended the game ahead 28-16.
With this victory, Indianapolis reached first place in the AFC and its 114 win of the decade. This broke a tie with the San Francisco 49ers of 1990 (113 wins), and obtaining straight 13-wins on its home field.
On the other hand, the Broncos, despite the defeat, still have an 8-4 record.
At the end of the game, Peyton Manning completed 20 of 42 passes for 220 yards with 4 touchdowns (3 of them to Dallas Clark) and 3 interceptions. While Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton completed 29 of 41 passes for 277 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception.
Brandon Marshall was magnificent. He not only broke the record with 21 receptions in a game, but also completed 200 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Colts quarterback Peyton Manning expressed his satisfaction of the way his team took the record of 13-0 and said it is an amazing feeling despite the difficult game against the Broncos. "When you think about how many we have won these two years, you do take a minute to think about it, and it does kind of hit you that are a bunch. This was a tough team. This was a great mental challenge."
Marshall, on other hand, stated that attaining the record of receptions for him was impressive but despite of his great performance in the game, what was important to him was to win and in the end, they lost. "Whenever you accomplish something like that, it definitely feels good. But at the end of the day we have a goal and our ultimate goal is to win games. I'd definitely trade in a couple of those catches for a win."
