Below is a list of the preliminary nominees who in their first year of eligibility.
Cornerback Deion Sanders: Sanders is one of the most famous cornerbacks to ever play in the league, and his stats speak for themselves. When he started his career in the NFL, he also started a career in the MLB, but ended up choosing football. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1989 NFL Draft and stayed in Atlanta for five seasons. He quickly developed a reputation as an interception threat. In 1994, he played one season for the San Francisco 49ers before transitioning to the Cowboys in 1995, where he stayed through the 1999 season. He finished his career with one season at the Washington Redskins and two at the Baltimore Ravens.
Running Back Marshall Faulk: Faulk only played for two teams during his tenure in the NFL, presumably because both teams recognized his star talent. He was a first-round selection by the Indianapolis Colts in 1994, where he remained through the 1998 season. He finished his career with the St. Louis Rams, where he played from 1999 to 2005. In his long and storied career, he amassed 12,279 rushing yards and 100 rushing touchdowns.
Wide Receiver Jimmy Smith: Jimmy Smith was a second-round selection for the Dallas Cowboys in the 1992 NFL Draft. He spent two unproductive seasons in Dallas dealing with injuries. He didn't play during the 1994 season, but then was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars before the start of the 1995 season. In his first season, he began showing promise and worked his way to a starting spot. He was with the Jaguars through his final season in 2005, amassing 12,287 yards and 67 touchdowns.
Running Back Jerome Bettis: Jerome Bettis is also one of the most well-respected players of his era, impressive on nearly all fronts. He was a first-round selection by the then Los Angeles Rams in 1993. He stayed with the Rams through their transition to St. Louis in 1995. In 1996, he made a career-defining move to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he stayed until he retired after the 2005 season. He helped the Steelers to a Super Bowl along with earning multiple Pro Bowl invites. In his long career, he had 13,662 rushing yards and 91 rushing touchdowns.
Tackle Willie Roaf: Roaf was a first-round selection in the 1993 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, and he proved to be quite the asset. In his first few seasons, he displayed his incredible blocking ability as well as his uncanny mobility despite his size. The perennial Pro Bowler played with the Saints through the 2001 season and then finished his career with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2002 to 2005.
Running Back Curtis Martin: Martin is an East Coast legend, making marks both on the New England Patriots and the New York Jets. The Patriots selected him in the third round of the 1995 NFL Draft. He stayed with the Patriots for three seasons and then transitioned to the Jets until his retirement after the 2006 season, although he didn't play that season because of an injury. In his career, he tallied 14,202 rushing yards and 90 rushing touchdowns.
Coach Dick Vermeil: Vermeil had head coaching positions with three teams, the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs. During the 1999 season, he helped the Rams win the Super Bowl and left a lasting impression on every franchise.
