Nfl Tickets - Running Back Tiers
Here is how I would group the top running backs in fantasy football for 2010:
Group A:
Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans: He'll go number one in more drafts than any other player, but I don't think he deserves a tier to himself. Johnson had a fantastic 2009 campaign, but I have a hard time thinking he'll repeat that performance in 2010. Johnson carried the ball a whopping 358 times last season, and he's not a big guy. I still think he'll be an elite fantasy back in 2010, but temper your expectations a bit.
Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings: Peterson is a steady fantasy force, though there are some concerns surrounding him this season. Peterson had some fumbling issues down the stretch and in the postseason in 2009, and he'll have to avoid putting the ball on the ground in 2010. His yards per carry average has gone down in each season he's been in the league and the team drafted running back Toby Gerhart in the 2010 draft to back up their feature back.
Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville Jaguars: While Jones-Drew doesn't possess the fantasy upside of the other two backs in this group, and probably doesn't sell as many NFL tickets as either of them, he could be the safest pick of the three. Jones-Drew has done nothing but put up numbers since coming into the league and his workload hasn't been over the top, which has kept his legs fresh. The Jacksonville offensive line was in shambles last season, but he still managed to make plays.
Group B:
Ray Rice, Baltimore Ravens: Rice is coming off his breakout season, one in which he proved himself to be a versatile threat that can accumulate fantasy points in a variety of ways. Rice should put together another good fantasy season in 2010, but I don't think he belongs in Group A. Anquan Boldin is sure to take away some of Rice's catches and Willis McGahee is still around to vulture goal line carries.
Group C:
Steven Jackson, St. Louis Rams: Jackson could go anywhere from fifth overall to the end of the first round of fantasy drafts. He's one of the best running backs in the league, but his supporting cast is nothing to get excited about. He ripped off good chunks of yardage in 2009 despite playing for the worst team in the league, but had a hard time finding the end zone. If the St. Louis offense can improve a little Jackson would be the best of the bunch here.
Frank Gore, San Francisco 49ers: With a beefed up offensive line and an offense that should improve in 2010, Gore could be in line for a career year. However, his injury history should give owners pause.
Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons: Turner was a beast in 2008, and was playing very well in 2009 before going down with an injury. Nobody is quite sure how he'll fare in 2010, but the upside for a ton of touchdowns is there.
Group D:
DeAngelo Williams, Carolina Panthers: Williams was putting together another phenomenal season in 2009 before suffering an injury. Jonathan Stewart looms, but Williams is still the starter on Carolina, which should make him a reliable week-to-week performer.
Ryan Grant, Green Bay Packers: Grant is an underrated fantasy back. He's good for solid yardage and touchdowns every season, but doesn't have a ton of upside. The Packers throw the ball a lot, but don't shy away from taking Grant.
Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh Steelers: Mendenhall is in a good situation in Pittsburgh in that he has very little competition for carries in an offense that will be looking to establish the run this season. He may faced some stacked boxes early in the season, but statistics show that Mendenhall does very well when receiving 20 or more carries in a game. If the Steelers stick to the ground game, Mendenhall could flourish.
Shonn Greene, New York Jets: Greene is another young back in a great spot. The Jets are committed to the run and have one of the best offensive lines in the league. LaDainian Tomlinson will steal some work, but not enough to stop me from taking Greene early in the draft.
