The Dolphins never say die, and they kept it close again in Tennessee
, but ultimately it was the Titans and their two headed monster prevailing, albeit in overtime, 27-24. With this game, both teams now join four other AFC sides at 7-7, looking up at the Ravens and Broncos, and hoping, praying for a banana skin or two to for them to slip up on.
The problem anyone faces when you come up against the Titans is this: how do you stop both Vince Young and Chris Johnson? But, unfortunately, you can't. You might be able to contain one or the other, but never both, and in the end you have to outscore them.
Early on in this game, the Dolphins could not keep pace, chipping away with field goals throughout, until finally, in the fourth quarter, they embarked on a late surge, sending it to overtime at 24 apiece.
Second year quarterback Chad Henne played well on occasions, demonstrating the strength of his arm, but also dropping passes over defenders with considerable touch and accuracy. But his performance will be remembered for his three interceptions: each one of them was costly, but it was the third, in overtime, that allowed the Titans to kick the winning field goal.
It's a similar case with Ricky Williams, who rumbled over the 1,000 yard mark for the season in this game - the 6 year span between now and his last 1,000 yard year is the longest in NFL history. But with his increased workload in recent weeks has come a tendency to fumble, and he did so again here.
On the other side of the ball, Chris Johnson was reasonably well contained - despite rushing for over 100 yards for his ninth straight game. Every time he touches the ball he threatens to take it all the way, but the Dolphins stopped him breaking the big one each time. And although he might be slipping off the pace to reach Eric Dickerson's single season rushing mark, he has been the very definition of a dual threat, and is well on track to break Marshall Faulk's record for total yards from scrimmage (2,429).
Once again Vince Young demonstrated how far he has come as a passer, firing all three of the Titans' touchdowns. He is looking every bit the talent that made him such a high draft pick back in 2006.
The next two weeks are crucial for both teams. Although their faint playoff hopes rely on either the Ravens or the Broncos losing, it is still very possible for them to sneak in, and they need to win out to stay alive in the race.
Both play crucial games next week with far-reaching playoff implications. The Dolphins face off against the Houston Texans, who also have playoff aspirations, and the resurgent Titans play host to the seemingly invincible San Diego Chargers.
The Chargers have never lost in December with Philip Rivers under centre, but their win last week against the Bengals clinched a playoff berth. It will be interesting to see if the Titans' desire and desperation can finally end the Chargers' phenomenal streak.
