Nigeria's Division On Ethnic Basis Is Not New
Nigeria was created by British colonial rulers. Earlier this land was divided between different tribes. This country had small kingdoms where small kings ruled. The small kingdoms were not able to stand against the big and powerful traders of Europe. Hence these kingdoms could not stand against the invaders. The traders of Europe had interest in the agricultural wealth of this area; therefore they used it for their benefit. British colonial rulers gave a solid infrastructure to this land; of course its name was made Nigeria because River Niger passed through its lands. But after departure of British people from this country, Nigeria was caught into grip of conspiracies of multinational oil companies. The ethnic groups of Nigeria have never been able to unite on one policy. The history of these people has not let them sit together and think for their progress. Tourists take Flights to Lagos with Arik Air just for enjoyment purposes. They spend their time and go back to their home. If they sit and look at the huge number of Nigeria's ethnic groups, they will know that each area of Nigeria has one specific group as majority.
Abia State is the third largest state of northern Nigeria. Arochukwu city is its capital; the founder of this city was Eze Agwu. Before him his forefathers had migrated from the central parts of Igbo kingdom to the places near this city. The area was Obong Okon Ita from where Nna Uru, the father of Eze Agwu, had come to Arochukwu. They had troubles in Obong Okon Ita because the natives of that area had turned against them. They had to fight Aro-Ibibio Wars with people of Obong Okon Ita.
Earlier, they were just living like tribes but then Eze Agwu started to give a shape to his people. He improved the way of living and established new settlements in this area. His steps were recognized by his people and they made him their King. So Eze Agwu was the first king of this city-state. These people started to live peacefully with the neighbouring areas. The peaceful era of these settlements was started with the marriage of the king of Obong Okon Ita and a woman of Eze Agwu tribes. But the marriage failed and the failure of this marriage played the decisive role in the Aro-Ibibio Wars.
The Aro-Ibibio Wars were fought in 17th and 18th century. Some other ethnic groups were also engaged in these wars. At the end of these wars the king of Obong Okon Ita was defeated and kingdom of Arochukwu was established.
