Ninja Training - How Much Crap Is On Your Hard Drive?
It's funny how some things never change - even though the conditions may appear to
. Do you know what I mean?
There was once a time - in the not too distant past - when finding information to help you with your ninja training was very difficult to find. If you didn't train with one of the few teachers in the world, or own one of only a handful of books on the subject, you missed out - or, worse yet, fell for every con artist who said that he was teaching authentic ninjutsu - the art of the Ninja.
But, with the growing popularity, use, and availability of the internet, this is no longer the case. While it is still VERY easy to fall for the fake teachers out there, it is no longer difficult to find the information that you need to master this art. And yet, every day, I get email from around the world or questions from my local students about what they should be working on. In fact, one of the most common questions that I get is: "What should I practice, Shidoshi?
I know that, what this earnest student is looking for is guidance. They're looking for the teacher to tell them what they should be doing to master their martial art.
And, while I accept this from a beginner - someone who has literally just found this martial art - but not from someone who has been doing research, study, or actual practice for more than a day or two. I don't expect, or accept, this question from any students who are already sitting on information.
That might sound harsh, but the truth is that, there are far too many students - both involved in ninja training and those studying other "styles" - who spend WAY too much time "collecting" information, and not enough time transforming that information into knowledge and wisdom. The problem for most of the students who contact me is not that they lack the information. No, for most of these students, the problem is that...
...they won't tear themselves away from their computer screen long enough to work on what the DO have!
Again, I know this sounds harsh. And by no, most people have already given in to their ego's self-protection mechanism and moved on to find more of the information they "need."
But, it begets the question: "How much 'crap' is on your hard drive?"
I call it crap for 2 reasons:
1) If it's just taking up space and either you forgot you have it or you haven't gotten around to reading or watching it - it's crap! And...
2) If you haven't taken the time to practice it to develop those skills before moving on to find something else to "add" to your skill set - it's crap!
In fact, one of the most enlightening things that one of my teachers ever told me was this:
"Everything that I'm teaching you is crap!" Until you take the time to practice, develop the skill, and find what works for you what doesn't - all this amounts to is me talking and you listening or taking notes. It's crap!"
"If you don't want it to be that, then take the time to "make it your own!"
He one thing that every good mentor is looking for is that his or students take action on the information and knowledge that they're teaching. And, things are no different in the art of ninjutsu.
Warriors are people of action. And reality says that "nothing happens - nothing is accomplished - without action."
