Nissan Chicago drivers can count on an affordable 2011 Versa

It's not flashy

It's not flashy. It didn't get a makeover. But it's reliable and is about the most affordable car on the market and the Nissan Versa will stay affordable at least through 2011. Dealers of Nissan Chicago highly recommend the Versa. It's a great second family car, the perfect choice for a first-time car buyer and affordable enough to send with the kids to college.

With a starting price on the 2011 model of $9,990 on the 1.6 base model, even with the $750 destination fee it won't break the bank. Buyers of used Nissan Lake County vehicles will appreciate that this is a new car at a used car price.

Nissan updates the Versa each year and even without re-contoured bumpers or high-end techno gadgets it has stayed competitive with other brands like the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta and Suzuki SX4. A few nice touches were added to this year's Versa, including a six-disc CD player on the 1.8 S sedan and anti-lock brakes on most of the 1.6 sedans. And for a car on the low end of the price range it has something pleasantly unexpected a built-in navigation system.

The 2011 Versa is in the showroom now at Nissan Chicago dealers, so check out this affordable wonder and see if it isn't a bargain. Really, it's a decent-sized car and it's new at almost 1980s prices. (Okay, I'm showing my age, but the first new car I got in 1990 cost twice what the Versa costs today, and although it had a lot of extra features it was certainly not as advanced as today's Versa.

The navigation system is a big plus, especially for the younger buyers who like their technology and may be driving to new and unexplored places like college or the workforce. Most under-30 drivers I know will buy a navigation system for their vehicle if it doesn't come with one. So the Versa actually saves a few hundred dollars more by including that must-have feature.

Used Nissan Lake County shoppers may want to consider taking the 2011 Versa for a test drive and getting a feel for how much car they will actually get for around $10,000. The reputation for reliability that Nissan has built also adds a lot to the value of any Nissan model.

I don't know if I can fit the whole family and all our stuff into the Versa without some squabbling, but I would love to have one as an extra car something to drive when I don't need a truck and want to save on gas use. In fact, we may see more people purchasing cars like the Versa to drive locally and maybe let the teenagers practice their driving skills in. Hmm . . . we will have one learning to drive soon.
