. When I first heard the quote I thought of sales. I am a salesman and much of my thinking is sales. Anyone in a sales field knows exactly what I am saying.

Imagine sitting at a family get together with fifteen people surrounding the dinner table and 5 different conversations all going on at once. Uncle Bob releases a silverware rattling, floor shaking, attention getting fart. Thirteen of the fifteen people stop their conversation and look, laugh, smirk, frown, and/or comment. Uncle Bob has now focused the attention on him. If he meant to or not, does not matter, the floor is now his. He takes advantage of the situation and mentions that he just got a promotion at work. He mentioned it earlier but it was not really focused on. Now he has the focus. He talks about it for a while but eventually people start up their own little conversations. Short lived attention but well used. He could always fart again.

I can see this same concept in a group style sales presentation. If you have fifteen people there is always going to be people thinking about other things or talking (texting, surfing, insert other actions here) while your presentation is being conducted. You have to get their attention and KEEP IT. The attention grabber needs to be something that a big percentage of the group has an interest in. This is going to differ based on the people, subject, product or service. Proper planning will give you the advantage you need to find out about the customer. Jokes can be a very good tool. You will need to make sure not to offend anyone or joke about a subject that might be iffy.
