No Vision Statement? Your Operation Probably Sucks
No Vision Statement? Your Operation Probably Sucks
Have you ever had an distasteful encounter when dealing with a business owner? Maybe it's the whole operation that truly sucks.
The receptionist might have been rude. Perhaps the salesperson really didn't care about you. What they really and truly cared about was making the sale. Maybe the treatment you got from the service department was less than stellar.
It could be that you were intentionally lied to. The result was you were left with a pretty bad taste in your mouth. Phew!
It happens every day.
The attitude of management in any business or organization has a trickle down effect. It's like a contagious infection and everybody below catches it. If it's a bad attitude and a lot of employees have the virus the result can be deadly for the business or at least leave the organization disabled. If you are the sole person running the operation, the situation is a lot less complex. YOU need to get your head screwed on straight my friend.
Have you ever taken the time to develop a business mission and vision statement? You just might find the experience a good investment. If you are operating a business and you don't have a personal mission and vision statement you are like a ship without a rudder because these statements are an articulation of the very soul of your business.
Your vision statement is how you see yourself and your business in the future. It is your objective. Your mission statement is the practical route you use on a day to day basis to get to your goal.
So let's get it together. Ask yourself, "Why for heaven's sake am I in business after all?". If your answer is "To make money" try harder. Raise the bar and aim for something better. That kind of attitude will just piss customers off when they interact with you. There's no heart in it and it leaves your customer out of the equation.
Google has one that I really appreciate. They may or may not live up to it. You can judge for yourself. It's called it "Ten Things We Know To Be True". Do a search for it on the web. I especially like the first one, "Focus on the user and all else will follow."
I"ll let you know what my own mission statement is. "I win. You win." That's it. I like to keep things real simple and uncomplicated.
