No winning record needed in the NFC West to clinch division
St. Louis, Seattle and San Francisco despite having a losing season will have an exciting end of season to decide who advances to the playoffs.
When you take an overall look at the NFL standings you will notice that all the divisions in each conference has those in first place with ten or more wins, and those in second with at least eight victories. Wait a minute. Did way say all? Well, that's our mistake. This would be true if it wasn't for the NFC West that will prize for the first time one of their mediocre teams with a playoff ticket without the need of a winning record.
Week 16 comes with two decisive games that could define everything before New Year: St. Louis Rams versus San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks at Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both of these games will be played on December 26 at 1:00 PM in the Edward Jones Dome, and at 4:15 PM in the Raymond James Stadium respectively. And as awkward as it may sound, the 49ers will have the best support in the Seahawks fans, we will tell you why.
The Rams are the leaders of the division as the tie breaker favors them over the Seahawks. Both teams are 6-8, but St. Louis' 20-3 win versus Seattle Week 4 tips the balance. Third are the 49ers with a 5-9 record and playoff chances still open. The only team isn't making the best out of this situation of clinching division with a losing record are the Arizona Cardinals. They said goodbye to the season already, since their 4-10 mark is insufficient to clinch division or wild card.
Their first game between St. Louis and San Francisco ended 23-20 in the OT for the 49ers home win. If the Rams defeat the 49ers on the rematch, they will have one less contender for the first place, as all of San Francisco's playoff chances would fade away. St. Louis would also be tying Seattle's 3-2-0 divisional record which could be decisive in case of a tiebreaker between them. We have to keep in mind that they could be disputing the division title on Week 17 at the Qwest Field.
We said that they could be disputing the division title because that would be the scenario as long as the 49ers don't defeat the Rams on Week 16. But if they do win, Rams and Seahawks would have to keep an eye on Candlestick Park on January 2 and cheer for the Cardinals to defeat the 49ers. Why is that? Due to the best divisional record with which San Francisco would reach week 17 of 4-1-0 that would give them the advantage in the tiebreaker, assuming that either Rams or Seahawks would finish 7-9 in the season as well as them.
Seattle will cheer for the 49ers on Week 16, but they also have to do their duties at Tampa Bay - third in the NFC South-, and versus Rams if they want to avoid undesirable tiebreakers. Head-to-head with the 49ers they are even, as they won in Week 1 31-6 and lost in Week 14 40-21. But with the Rams they are down because of Week 4 road loss by 20-3, although they could tie them with a win on the last game of the season.
The three of theses teams know that once in the divisional round it all starts from scratch, and this losing season could turn into something much better than what the regular season is going to leave, but only for one of them.
