Nokia X5: Will The Unusual Design Attract The Younger Generation Of Buyers?

The Nokia X5 is the latest addition in the X Series smartphone line

. Whilst this new device looks somewhat different from other Nokia products, coming in the unusual mix of a square form factor with full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, it definitely offers a fresh new experience to users.

The phone is a Symbian 60 Series version 3 device and is aimed at the younger set of consumers. This is because the handset has built-in high-quality social networking features; a fine set of media player and comes with a wide range of colours which include Yellow Green, Azure, Pink, Graphite Black and Purple.

Unusual look and feel

Whether they find the handset attractive or not is dependent on the individual buyer. One thing is certain, the look and feel of the handset are definitely unlike other smartphones in the market today. This slight quirkiness gives some appeal to the Nokia X5. As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of dazzling colours to choose from and this is an ideal gadget that will make heads turn in the college grounds or the night clubs.

The nearly square shape of the device may take some getting used to but it is compact enough to slip inside a purse or pocket. The phone comes with a measurement of 74.3 x 66.4 x 16.8 mm and weighs 129 grams. It has a 2.36-inch TFT display which boasts 256,000 colours and 320 x 240 pixels resolution.

Network and connectivity

X5 users will enjoy connectivity of both 2G and 3G networks. 2G networks provide quad band GSM 850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900 connectivity whilst 3G networks provide connectivity through tri band HSDPA 900/ 1900/ 2100. Both Class 32 GPRS and EDGE provide users with data access.

High speed browsing is possible on the Nokia X5 with the presence of Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and HSDPA. Since the mobile handset comes with tight social network integration, fast internet access will allow users to easily update status with posts, images and videos.

Memory and multimedia support

The X5 comes with substantial memory that can support numerous applications, software and media content. Upon purchase, the user will receive a 2-GB memory card bundled free with the phone. If further expansion of the storage capacity is required, an external microSD expansion card slot to maximise the memory up to 32 GB. The device comes with 200 MB internal memory when shipped.

The camera included in the X5 may not be high-end but it is certainly more than decent. The phone is equipped with a 5 megapixel digital camera with LED flash. The image output of this snapper is rendered with 2592 x 1944 pixels resolution.

A secondary camera is lacking but the main camera is capable of VGA-quality video recording at 15 frames per second.

The Nokia X5 comes pre-installed with a versatile multimedia player which can support both MP4, H.264 and H.263 video formats as well as MP3, WMA, WAV and eAAC+ audio formats.
