Not Just Martial Arts Classes
Losing wieght and improving fitness is one of the major goals people starting our Martial Arts Classes in Birmingham want to achieve
. The beauty of Martial Arts training is they provide more than just fitness and could save a person's life; self-defence capability is another expectation people beginning Martial Arts have. Also, classes are percieved as fun and an ideal way to work off the stress of the day; a third reason why people take up any exercise in general but Martial Arts in particular.
These three reasons provide the driving force for people to begin Martial Arts training. Expectations and goals are one thing but do Martial Arts training deliver on these? This post will try to discover whether Martial Arts training satisfies the motivations people have when starting. All Martial Arts classes contain a significant fitness element; skills such as punching, kicking and grappling are all strenuous and WILL burn calories. While Martial Arts classes vary in intensity all classes should provide a good workout.
Any style of Martial Arts that has a competitive side will require you to get fit to compete. For example, in order to prepare you for three rounds or more in the ring, Mauy Thai boxing training will include a lot of fitness training. So even if you never actually compete you will train as if you were, you will get fit as a result. A traditional Karate class which emphasises forms, or Kata in Japanese, over sparring or competition may place less emphasis on fitness than a Muay Thai class. Some Karate schools do not stick to this rule as some even enter their students into MMA and Kickboxing competitions so the distinction is not set in stone. However, we are safe to assume that combat sport classes will give more time to fitness training than traditional Martial Arts.
In terms of self-defence, EVERY Martial Arts class will help you survive a nasty scrape, certainly better than no training at all. Despite this traditional Martial Arts are more interested in retaining originial skills and drills. This means that some aspects of training can be out of date.
Combat sports prepare you specifically for the ring/cage where there are rules to protect fighters from the more deadly attacks. The training in a self-defence class will include these deadlier techniques and as a result are better for preparing you to withstand an attack, in theory at least. This is not clear cut, however, and there is considerable debate as to which approach to training is best for self-defence. Any form of Martial Arts training will help you prepare to survive an attack but there are pros and cons for each. Even the Traditional Martial Arts contain some deadly techniques; combat sports get you very fit but the focus is sport, which detracts from the purely self-defence aspects of training, which are all the self-defence/protection systems train for.
One thing is for sure, any form of Martial Arts training will blow away the stress from the day. Blasting out punches and kicks on the pads and/or chucking a training partner around simply busts stress. I truly believe that every home should have a heavy bag to blast away at. Families would get on better as a result.
While there are differences in emphasis across the range of styles, starting Martial Arts classes will deliver, to varying degrees, on the three main reasons people cite for taking lessons. You will get fit, you will learn to protect yourself and you will beat stress, so what are you waiting for?
