When the new millennium, at the close of the Great Jubilee during which we celebrated the two thousandth anniversary of the birth of Jesus and a new stretch of the road is opened for the Church, the words echo in our hearts with Jesus when one day, after speaking to the crowds from Simon's boat, he invited the Apostle to "take off" for a catch: "Duc in altum" (Lk 5:4). Peter and his first companions trusted Christ's words, and cast the nets. "And having done so, they caught a great fish" (Lk 5:6).Duc in altum! These words ring out for us today, and invites us to remember the past with gratitude, to live the present with enthusiasm and to look with confidence to the future: "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever! "(Hebrews 13:8).Great was the joy of the Church this year, she devoted herself to contemplating the face of her Bridegroom and Lord. She became more than ever a pilgrim people, led by him who is "the great shepherd of the sheep" (Heb 13:20). With extraordinary energy, involving so many of its members, the People of God here in Rome, as in Jerusalem and in all the individual local churches, went through the "Holy Door" which is Christ. To him, the goal of history and only Savior of the world, the Church and the Spirit cried out: "Marana tha - Come, Lord Jesus" (cf. Rev 22,17.20, 1 Cor 16:22).
It is impossible to measure the moment of grace that, in the year, has touched people's hearts. But surely, "a river of living water" that continually flows "from the throne of God and the Lamb" (cf. Rev 22:1), has been poured on the Church. And the water that refreshes and renews the Spirit (cf. Jn 4:14). And the merciful love of the Father, in Christ, we were once known and given. At the end of this year we can repeat with renewed jubilation the ancient words of thanksgiving: "Praise the Lord for he is good, His mercy endures forever" (Ps 118 [117], 1).2. I feel the need to address you, dear friends, to share this song of praise. In this Holy Year of the millennium I thought, as a milestone, the beginning of my Pontificate. I was caught in this celebration as a providential, when the Church, thirty-five years after the Second Vatican Council, was asked to question its renovation with new enthusiasm to take on his mission of evangelization.It is the Jubilee succeeded in this aim? Our commitment, with its generous efforts and inevitable failings, is in the eyes of God but we can not fail to give thanks for the "wonders" that God has done for us. "Misericordias cantabo Domini in aeternum" (Ps 89 [88], 2).At the same time, as was the case before us demands to be reconsidered and, in a sense, interpretation, and hear what the Spirit, so intense during this year, said the Church (cf. Rev 2,7.11.17 etc. ..)
Above all, dear brothers and sisters, it is necessary for us to project ourselves into the future that awaits us. Often during these months we have looked to the new millennium opens, we lived this Jubilee not only as a remembrance of the past, but as a prophecy of the future. We now need to treasure the grace received, translating it into resolutions and guidelines for action. A task I wish to invite all local churches. In each of them, gathered around their bishop, the Word, fellowship and "breaking of bread" (cf. Acts 2:42), is "truly present and active Church of Christ, the one, holy catholic and apostolic ".1 It is especially in the actual situation of each church that the mystery of the one People of God takes the particular form that fits it to individual contexts and cultures.This rooting of the Church in time and space reflected in the final analysis, the movement of the Incarnation. Now, therefore, that each local church, reflecting on what the Spirit says to the People of God in this special year of grace, and indeed in the longer period of time from the Second Vatican Council of the Great Jubilee, perform an audit of its fervor recoveries and new impetus for its spiritual and pastoral commitment. It is to this end that I wish to offer in this letter at the conclusion of the Jubilee Year, the contribution of my Petrine ministry, so that the Church may shine ever more in the variety of his gifts and the unity of his journey.
