Nutrition, Supplements and Other Useful Remedies
Nutrition and Supplements:
It is always said that a will-balanced, whole-grain diet with plenty of raw, organically grown vegetables and fruit should provide enough of the various nutrients that are normally needed for good health. There is some concern, however, that aggressive agricultural processes have resulted in losses of specific nutrients in the food chain. Of cause, this also occurs naturally; in some places, for example, the soils have always been low in selenium. Thus, although food tables give us the quantity of vitamins and minerals that are normally present in foods, they represent only an average-you cannot know whether the particular orange that you are eating contains 1 mg or 100 mg of vitamin C.
Meeting Increased Demands for nutrients:
There are also specific times when nutritional supplements are required to meet increased demands. Supplements are needed during pregnancy, while breast-feeding, and during and after weight loss. The elderly need them to compensate for poor digestive absorption. Supplements are also required by people taking certain drugs, including contraceptive pills, that increase metabolic requirements for particular nutrients.
Vitamin and Mineral Supplements:
If you are unsure whether you need a supplement, but are generally feeling that your physical energy is low or that you are mentally lethargic, it is always worth trying a vitamin and mineral supplement for a month. Select one that is not time-released; contains less than 10 mg each of the major B vitamins (B1, B5 and B6); has a zinc-to-copper ratio of not more than 14:1; and is free of additives and colorings. Flavored supplements are available for children, and can e obtained in powder or liquid form for easier ingestion.
Variations in Supplement Quality:
Nutritional supplements are available from pharmacies and health food shops, and by mail order from bricks-and-mortar companies or through the internet. There is a wide variation in costs but this usually reflects the purity of the product. If you have a sensitivity to , or tend to be allergic to, dairy products or additives such as tartrazine, you may be justified in paying more for supplements from specialized health food shops. These may be organically prepared and have fewer bulking agents and other materials in them. In the case of obtained by using a juice extraction machine although these vitamins are as fresh as possible, and therefore minimize deterioration; also, any enzymes still present in the juices will be active.
Deterioration of Nutrients:
Vitamin a will deteriorate with a mixture of heat and air and can be antedoted by metals. Thiamin (vitamin B1) is the least stable vitamin and is easily destroyed by cooking and storage, by air, by water, by alkali, and by sulfur dioxide. Protein can be adversely affected by prolonged heating, and riboflavin (vitamin B2) can be affected by light.
