Advantages of Nylon Wires over Steel Wires in Making Bracelets

Nylon wire ties are preferred in bracelet-making because nylon is lighter, safer to use and more flexible to use than steel wires. With the use of nylon, there is less chance of cutting or pricking your skin, youll have more options of doing your ties, and youll be having no hard time of bending or shaping the cord.

Another advantage of nylon wires over steel wires (in making bracelets) stems from the fact that these nylon wires are manufactured in different colors. Their colors are homogenously embedded or mixed into the nylons chemical make-up while those of steel are only painted on the steels surface. And, while an even painting over the steels surface can prevent rusting from easily taking place, the paint will be gradually ripped by water and other corrosive materials off the surface. (Other bracelet makers may prefer nylon wires that are colorless.)

Additionally, contrary to the notion that nylon wires are too soft for use in areas where superior tensile strength is required of cords, nylon wires and nylon wire ties are employed in marine, aviation, auto industries, and even in aerospace! They are also popular in these areas because nylon wires can be manufactured uniquely to produce thin and thick nylon wires with excellent tensile strength and improved resistance to extreme temperatures, oil, fuels, grease and ultraviolet rays.

Overhand and Square Knots for Bracelet Making

Cut off a desired length of the nylon cord. String the beads along this cord until a comfortable length of the jewelry piece is achieved. Hold the two ends of the cord and make the two ends meet, getting ready for tying.

For overhand knots, make a small loop, then pull these ends through the loop. Trim the ends after pulling the knot very tight. Tuck the knot into the beads. Do that as far as possible so that the knot will disappear from sight.

For square knots, it is almost the same process - the only difference is in tying. Make the left half of the cord cross over the right half and then let the end of the upper half pass under into the loop. Then slightly pull the ends to tighten. Now, make the half of the cord that is now on the right side cross over the one that is now on the left. Then make the right half pass under on the way up the center of the loop. Always trim the ends after this and conceal the knot.

These are two of the most popular knots not only in bracelet-making but also in creating necklaces of different lengths and for different purposes. And no matter how long manufacturers would like their necklaces to be, these knots are sufficient in holding the beads in place together.

Regarding prices, it is almost always the case that steel wires are more expensive than nylon wires. But that has nothing to do with the efficiency of nylon wire ties in keeping the beads tightly in place.
