The full form of OLAP is Online Analytical Processing that is a sort of methodology

which enables executives, managers and analysts to access to a large amount of data in a rapid and intuitive manner.

Online Analytical Processing Systems Help a Lot in Decision Support

In the current competitive world, IT organizations have many things to share with their workers. Hence, sometimes they have to face challenges when they deliver systems that are incorporated with the corporate information that helps the workers to make tactical and strategic decisions on the right time. Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) systems have the presence of these decision support systems that allow knowledge workers to flexibly, quickly, intuitively manipulate operational data with the help of familiar business terms with an aim to provide analytical insight.

OLAP systems are used for purposes like:

1. Analyzing the data from different point of views or you can say from different business dimensions,

2. Supporting the decision-makers during the complex analysis requirements and,

3. Handling complex analysis against large input data sets.

OLAP systems include two major architectures: relational OLAP (ROLAP) and multidimensional OLAP (MOLAP). MOLAP architectures do analysis using a multidimensional database, while ROLAP architectures access data directly. According to ROLAP architects, OLAP capabilities serve the end users on a direct basis against the relational database.

The following observations have been noticed when the comparison between these two architectures has taken place:

ROLAP has the ability to serve a huge assortment of business analysis perspectives, while MOLAP works well for ten or fewer dimensions.

ROLAP is best suited for supporting OLAP analysis against large volumes of input data, while MOLAP produces best results when the input data set is fewer than five gigabytes.

ROLAP provides adequate performance for dynamic consolidations whereas MOLAP serves the purpose of supporting only batch consolidations.
