Oaps Drivers Vs Teen Drivers

Old age Pensioners or Teenage Drivers, which group are the safer drivers

?

When I think of OAP drivers, I automatically think of slow, over cautious drivers. They cause queues and take far too long to manoeuvre. There are times when they dont even notice how dangerous they can be. Although Im sure there are some safe older aged drivers out there.

Then we have teenage drivers. This is one I can relate to as Ive been there done that, so what pops to mind when I think of teenage drivers? Impatient, over confident, loud music playing, road rage instigating and on the whole a bit of a danger to other road users. But, I guess that might have just been me and Im sure there are good teenage drivers out there.

Lets see what the statistics say. Drivers involved in fatal crashes (this is per 100,000 licensed drivers) between the ages 15-20 is 69.5. Driver involved in fatal crashes that are 70 plus years of age, equals 22.1. But you must keep in mind how many more teenage drivers there are on road compared to elderly drivers, there are nearly as 3 times many more teenage drivers out there than old drivers.

Amongst the teenagers the crashed were caused due to Alcohol, Male drivers and for not wearing a seatbelt. With the old drivers a lot of fatal accidents were due to drivers turning right and not seeing oncoming traffic, which happens 7 times more often to the elderly than teenage drivers. In some cases the accidents didnt involve other vehicles and majority happened in daylight and the drivers were wearing seatbelts.

With teenagers the causes of accidents are usually because of drowsiness, Alcohol, failure to keep in lane, reckless driving, driving too fast, over correction and using their mobile phones. With the elderly drivers, accident were caused due to things like being sick and blacking out, loosing focus, physical impairments and taking improper turns.

Another factor could be that some of the OAPs may be driving older less safe vehicles, but then the same can be said for teenagers who modify their cars to dangerous levels. When Ive been out and about Ive seen elderly drivers, driving cars such as the Austin Metro and Nissan Sunny. Younger drivers tend to go for VW Golfs, Honda Civics and Citroen Saxos. Recently I saw the Citroen DS3 at Citroen DS3 Newcastle showroom and thought it would be a cool car for both OAPs and teenagers.

So my conclusion is that both OAP drivers and Teen Drivers are an equal hazard to the roads. They have their good and bad points, some more than others but once put together they come out equally dangerous.
