Occupy Activists, Target Shutting Down Ports In West Coast

Occupy activists target shutting down ports in the West Coast from 12th October

. Their argument is that if they paralyze some of the busiest ports of the country they will slice into the profits of the corporate sector.

This most dramatic gesture of the Occupy activists is one of its latest moves - Wall Street on the Waterfront. The recent police raids conducted in many cities had broken up their encampments but the organization has remained stiff. The protest is focusing on the economic inequality between the 1% Americans who have and the 99%, being represented by the Occupy supporters, who do not have.

The contention of the protestors is that the ports of America symbolize "economic engines for the elite". Their angst is against SSA Marine (port operator of West Coast) and EGT (grain exporter). They are part of the hated 1%.

One of the biggest stakeholders in SSA Marine is Goldman Sachs. The latter has repeatedly been targeted by the Occupy protestors since the debut of the movement.

SSA Marine and EGT have also hit the news because of its clash with unions recently. The Occupy activists want to give their support to the dock workers but the union is keeping a distance from the Monday marches.

Prior to the breaking of dawn hundreds began to picket at Port of Oakland. Trucks were stopped from moving inside. There were no reports of major skirmishes with the police. The protestors managed to shut down the port.

About 400 activists protested in Southern California and got together to march towards Port of Long Beach - the target was the dock of SSA Marine.

Nearly 300 Occupy activists gathered in Portland in Oregon under the umbrella of Shut Down the Ports Working Group - an offshoot of Occupy Portland. One of the organizers, Kari Koch had expected more to join in. Three people were arrested by the police. A sword and a gun were seized from them. They said they were going to join the protestors.

The Occupy activists had plans to set up blockades in Vancouver, Washington, Tacoma and Seattle.

The authorities of Port of Oakland has requested to the residents of the city not to take part in the blockade as it could cost jobs for the locals and hurt the standing of the port. Isaac Kos-Read, spokesperson of Port of Oakland said "The port is going to do all that it can to keep operations going. Our businesses need to hear that. Our workers need to know that".
