Beginning with the day of its foundation in 1(13) April 1865 Odessa National University named after Mechnikov was founded in 1865. Since it is one of the leading educational system formations not only in Ukraine but also in the world in development of scientific researches: Odessa National University possesses the 48th place in the world rating of universities. The university is named after I.I.Mechnikov, scientist, one of the founders of immunology, microbiology and evolutionary embryology, the Nobel prizeman in 1908, who worked in Odessa National University in 1870 1872.

World famous scientists worked in Odessa National University: I.M.Sechenov (physiologist, the founder of the native physiology), D.K.Zabolotniy (microbiologist), V.I.Lipskiy (botanist), O.O.Kovalevskiy (biologist), F.N.Shvedov (physicist), F.I.Uspenskiy (archeologist), V.I.Grigorovich (slavicist), D.K.Tretijakov (zoologist) etc.

Odessa National University named after Mechnickov is accredited at the forth level of accreditation. From 1998 European standard educational degrees were provided: bachelor, specialist and master. The main task of the university is to educate qualified human resources in different spheres of economy, education and manufacture.

Odessa National Mechnikov University consists of 4 institutes: Institute of Economy and Mechanics, Institute of Mathematics, Institute of Postgraduate Education and Institute of Social Sciencies; and 10 faculties: the faculty of Romano German philology, the faculty of philology, the faculty of history, the faculty of economy, the faculty of geology and geophysics, biological, chemical, physical faculties; 7 specialized councils, where dissertations are defended for 29 specialties.

Odessa National Mechnikov University has 20 departments where 41 licensed specialties are trained. The University has contracts with the best schools of Ukraine and collects smart pupils to study at the university after school graduation.

There are 28 famous scientific schools make their researches in Odessa National University. Scientific researches are sponsored by state budget with a total volume of 1 mln. USD per year. 30 scientific departments provide scientific researches: Research Studies Institutes, Research and Development Centers and Scientific Research Laboratories.

Odessa National Mechnikov University is famous by its astronomical observatory. The scientific library of the University is one of the biggest, the best and the oldest libraries in Ukraine: it possesses more than 3.6 mln. volumes, it has books issued in the 15th century. The Botanic Garden of the University deserves special attention: 3840 plant species, sorts and hybrids are represented. The Paleontology Museum is one of the best paleontology museums in the world and posses more than 40 thousand objects.
