Offensive Line Leads The Way For Michigan Wolverines Over The Huskies, 30-10
Ann ArborDenard Robinson had a whale of a game against Connecticut making you think
, why was there a QB controversy? Robinson was19-22 for 186 yards throwing the ball and ran for 197 yards, a Michigan school record for a QB. That production does not come by itself. The Michigan offensive line excelled as a group getting a great push and not allowing defenders to get off their blocks. From his read option position, Robinson called his own number most of the day and found running room right up the gut of the Uconn defense over and over again. At one point, Michigan was 13 of 15 in 3rd down conversions of 10 yards or less. Uconn could not get Michigan off the field. When Robinson threw, receivers were wide open because of the respect they had for the running game. With Robinsons 4.3 speed and the play of the offensive line, all defenders were forced to honor the run allowing Robinson to find open receivers. The Michigan offense looks light years better than last year at the same time. The Huskies offense was inconsistent, especially the passing game. QB Zach Frazer was often inaccurate and his receivers, who were open quite often, did not make adjustments to the ball. Connecticut was able to run effectively when they had it. Although the Michigan defensive line, led by Mike Martin, was pretty stout up the middle, RB Jordan Todman often found room on the perimeter rushing for 105 yards on 20 carries. But time and again, Uconn came up short on 3 down conversions where they were only 25% successful for the game. A key play late in the 3rd quarter was a fumble at the 2 yard line by Connecticuts D.J. Shoemate when the Huskies were driving to close the gap to 24-17. After that play, Michigan marched down the field and scored a touchdown when Robinson hit Vicent Smith for an 11 yard TD. This took all the wind out of the Huskies sails.
Key Points:
Michigan: The offensive line was very cohesive and maintained their blocks throughout the play. Deonard Robinson has the ability to pass and read defenses. His quickness was already a given. The defensive line looked relatively stout but the second and third tears looked vulnerable in space and in pass coverage.
Connecticut: The defensive line had troubles getting off blocks. I think it was a combination of Michigans line playing well and Uconns defensive line underperforming. There was confusion in the zone coverage which may have been caused by Robinsons fakes but still there are no excuses for him going 19 of 22. On offense, the offensive line performed ok and opened up some holes for Todman. But the inability of Zach Frazer to connect with his wide receivers killed most drives.
