Official Warning Regarding Topamax
Topamax is a largely used anti-seizure medication
. Although it was originally designated to treat epilepsy by slowing down abnormal electrical impulses in the body, today it is more used to prevent migraine due to its capacity of widening blood vessels in the brain. Around 30 million U.S. citizens suffer from migraine, but only half of them are diagnosed. 98% of the individuals with frequent migraines take medication but in the majority of cases they still experience pain and discomfort. Topamax treatment has shown great results as the majority of the patients noticed improvements with very few side effects.
Despite these results recently a number of Topamax lawsuits have been filed. The legal actions are the consequence of certain malformations suffered by babies whose mothers were on treatment during pregnancy. The reported problems include cleft lip and cleft palate. Topamax cleft lip occurs when the structures that form the upper lip fail to fuse, resulting in a gap between the two parts of the lip. The gap called cleft can be small or extend to the nose and gums. Cleft palate consists in a gap in the roof of the mouth. The two malformations often come together and affected individuals will have difficulties eating, speaking, dental and possibly hearing problems.
The condition is diagnosed at birth as the malformation is obvious. In some cases a diagnoses can be made even before birth. Fortunately treatment is available although it consists in a series of painful and expensive surgeries, including bone and dental implant and plastic surgery. In order to avoid in the future such situations, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning in 2011, informing patients and doctors about the potential risks. The chances of developing malformations are higher in case of a Topamax treatment than in case of other anti-seizure medications. Women should avoid the drug especially in the first trimester of the pregnancy when the basic structures of the fetus develop. In case a woman already taking the drug becomes pregnant she should consult her doctor immediately for specialized advice. If a child was born with malformations due to the medication a personal injury lawyer can also be helpful.
