Oh My Poor Pluto :(

Oh My Poor Pluto :(

Oh My Poor Pluto :(

Pluto was predicted in 1840 by Urbain Le Verrier and was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh, after Astronomers noticed that the orbits of Neptune and Uranus were being affected by the gravity of an unknown object, which is named as Pluto.

Well, everything is okay till here but what the hell on this Earth made scientists to shout Pluto is not a full fledged planet ? Pluto was first called as a planet in the Solar system but now it got demoted from its position and called as just a member of Kuiper belt.

In 1978 , the discovery of Charon , so called moon of Pluto did enable he scientists to calculate the mass of Pluto and it was found to be just 0.2% that of the Earth and the succeeding argument was that if Pluto is so less in its mass , how could its gravitational force cause so called discrepancies in Neptune and Uranus' orbits and thus the question mark rose beside the statement, Pluto is a planet.

In 2006, Pluto was demoted to the category of "dwarf planet" just because of the Eris , an icy body near Pluto. They calculated that the weight of Eris is much more than Pluto and they began considering Eris as the original planet, until this November 6 but I don't really understand why scientists gave such a big conclusion out of a very small evidence and that too which was proved to be false , later.

Then in 2006, the International Astronomical Union came up with a perfect definition of the word "planet" , may be to clear all the confusions in people like me, regarding what makes us call a body as planet of this Solar system ;) and that definition is A body that circles the sun without being some other object's satellite, is large enough to be rounded by its own gravity (but not so big that it begins to undergo nuclear fusion, like a star) and has "cleared its neighborhood" of most other orbiting bodies. According to this definition, they mean that a planet shouldn't be a satellite of any other object and should be in orbit around Sun and it should be nearly round in shape and then it should be gravitationally dominant, and there are no other bodies of comparable size other than its own satellites or those otherwise under its gravitational influence. This point "that should have "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit." has become a chuck to the Pluto. Because, Pluto shares its orbital neighborhood with its adjacent Kuiper belt and finally that made the scientists drop Pluto from planet category to dwarf planet category :(

Pluto's size also contributed to this demotion as it is about 1,455 miles (2,342 km) wide, which is far less than that of the Mercury and it acted more like dwarf planets with its orbit more elliptical and more inclined in the Solar system than any other.

But many other Astronomers are just unable to go with this conclusion and they started arguing that the definition by IAU has some flaws in it in the 3rd condition of "clearing your neighborhood". They say that no planet can completely clear all the objects in its orbit. And they also rose a proposal that Ceres and Eris and many other objects revolving the Sun should be considered as planets and which may lead to the huge list of planets which earlier comprises of just 9.

With this , even though scientists feel it as something special to re classify Pluto as a planet, they are lagging themselves back as they are afraid of the so called list. But I don't really understand what is wrong if we have 900 planets instead of 9 because the ultimate wish of any scientist is that they should not go wrong anywhere with their science

.Finally politics have crept even in Astronomy , huh !! But every one should consider the fact that the correct classification of this Pluto may lead to further facts about our Solar system.

All this concern for Pluto is just for our sake because Pluto doesn't care about where it is placed , in Planets' category or Kuiper belt because it is not a living being like me, who made the whole discussion out of mercy on the dearest planet Pluto. :)
