Oil Sands Technology: An Overview

In simple terms heavy oil is any type of unrefined crude oil that is very thick and viscous to flow by itself easily

. A kind of thinner is needed to be used to make the heavy oil flow. The thinner is called as diluents and allows the diluted oil to flow freely through the pipelines of an oil refinery. Heavy oil extraction is known more popularly as oil sands extraction technology. The largest deposits of oil sands are found in Canada as well as over 30 countries the world over. The key energy supply of heavy oil is called as oil sands, tar sands or energy sands. These oil sands are utilized in order to extract the heavy oil throughout the world.

Conventionally the production of oil sands consisted of strip mining wherein the sands that contained oil bearing substance called Bitumen, were dug up in enormous measures uncovering the land. This bitumen was then injected with hot steam water to be separated from heavy crude oil and the sand byproduct. This technique of oil extraction was criticized by environmental groups as wasteful and destructive. Since land was dug up and then natural gas was used to heat the water. The method of oil extraction was condemned as too resource intensive and expensive process.

But recently new oil sands extraction technologies have been developed which enables the reduction of both water and natural gas use. New technologies like Electro Thermal technology and Solvent Extraction technology are easier and reduce green gas emission. Importance of Utah oil sands is on rise today as larger part of world depends on this natural resource for their fuel consumption needs.
