Roof repairs are very common these days, with many homeowners switching to the more sustainable single ply roofing membrane, however the prestigious Calgary's Olympic Oval has been announced to be closed for several weeks due to roofing repair.

The renovation is estimated to cost a magnificent $9.7 million, having closed the skating facility until early August whilst workers refurbish the roofing panels.

The general look of the roof will not however be changed, meaning that each of the triangular porcelain and enamel panels will be individually taken down and repaired. Although the panels are being kept, the old membrane and insulation will be stripped out and replaced with a new membrane before the structure is slowly reassembled.

The Calgary Olympic Oval, located in the University of Calgary, co-director Kam Kiland said in a statement: "Keeping the original roof design was always our plan"

"The design is a good one; it's just deteriorated over the decades"

"With a new membrane and a few tweaks, the refurbished roof should last for decades."

The Olympic Oval will be completely closed between now and Aug 1, however the entire project should be completed before the start of the 2011-12 speed skating season.

In November 2010, it was announced that the federal government had revised the trust arrangement under which the facility was operated since it was built for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.

Instead of relying on interest payments from the Olympic Endowment Fund, which was also created for the '88 Games, the oval would receive a $10 million withdrawal from the fund to address immediate infrastructure needs.

Those needs included fixing the leaky roof, which has allowed water to drip onto the ice and has been a safety concern for skaters.

The new roofing membrane will inevitably last for decades, meaning that the Calgary Olympic Oval will be able to hold more games.

Roofing membranes typically last longer than other roofing materials, in addition to the benefit of not having to change the unique look of the Oval. Leaving the ice safer for skaters, and overall saving the energy bills, this year's winner will be the owner of this magnificent structure.
