Omega 3 - But Not From Fish Oil!
Omega 3 refers to a group of essential fatty acids. These nutrients regulate the body's production of cholesterol, and strengthening cell walls, fortifying them against the invasion of viruses and bacteria. They are essential nutrients for the development of the brain and retina, and in infant development. They improve immune functions, they alleviate arthritis symptoms and inflammation, and they lower the risk for cardiovascular disease. Omega-3 fatty oils also prevent or delay the development of cancer and related tumors and may improve bone growth.
Why Not From Fish?
Fish live in a cesspool of bacteria, PCBs*, feces, mercury, toxins and other pollutants we would never want to eat. Eating even small amounts of fish can cause health problems.
Farm-Raised Fish--Free of PCBs?
How about farm raised fish? Are they better than the wild variety?
Salmon, carp, catfish, cod and bass are the most commonly farmed fish, usually cultivated in netted enclosures within natural marine environments. Besides being an environmental disaster, fish farming does not produce healthier fish. Quite the contrary. Farmed fish, because they cannot hunt for themselves, require feed to be supplied to them. For carnivorous fish, such as cod, salmon and catfish, this comes in the form of pellets processed from wild, contaminated fish.
Concentrating fish in high densities and in close confines inevitably leads to the outbreak of diseases, bacteria and parasites. Fish farmers regularly use antibiotics to combat these problems. These drugs get into the natural marine environment and the human food chain. Farmers also coat their nets with pesticides to prevent damage from algae and shellfish. These chemicals leach into the water and enter the marine and human food chains.
* PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) are mixtures of up to 209 individual chlorinated compounds. There are no known natural sources of PCBs. PCBs are either oily liquids or solids. PCBs have been used as coolants and lubricants in transformers, capacitors, and other electrical equipment because they don't burn easily and are good insulators. The manufacture of PCBs was halted in the U.S. in 1977 because of evidence they build up in the environment and can cause harmful health effects. However, East European countries continued to use them until much later. Much of the PCBs were released into lakes and oceans and persist in the environment. Fish absorb PCBs from contaminated sediments and from their food.
