On The Road In Mexico: Tips For Road Trips Down South

, exciting road trips through Mexico. It is most people's dream to one day travel the open road in search of sun kissed beaches, to encounter mysterious indigenous cultures and the search to find the perfect margarita. While the characters in "On the Road" certainly didn't have a travel plan, most people prefer a road trip that is planned out, with the hopes of avoiding mishaps and paving the road for a fun and exciting adventure that they will remember for a lifetime. Here are a few tips to planning your own "On the Road" adventure to Mexico.

1. Make sure your vehicle is road ready. Mexico has thousands of miles of first class roads and toll roads that are in great shape. However, Mexico is a mountainous country, meaning you may encounter windy conditions and steep roads, depending on where you travel. In addition, you may find yourself on long stretches between towns, especially in the north of Mexico where it is sparsely populated. New brakes, or at least brake pads, are recommended at a minimum.

2. Get insured. Whether you are driving a car or an RV through Mexico, you need to have it insured with Mexican auto insurance. Your American or Canadian auto insurance is not enough and will not cover you in the event of an accident. Both Mexican auto insurance and Mexican RV insurance can be purchased online. It's also a good idea to get travel health insurance when you get your Mexican auto insurance. Travel health insurance will cover you in case of a medical emergency or accident while you are in Mexico, insuring you get the best medical care if you should need it. When you purchase your policies online, you can print out a copy of your policy to show to officials when you cross the border into Mexico.

3. Get a road map. For some reason, road maps are not a common item sold in Mexican gas stations. If you leave on your trip without one, good luck scoring one on the road. Your best bet is to buy one ahead of time. You can purchase road maps at most book stores or online. A word of caution: based on first hand experience, it's not a good idea to use your travel guide's maps as road maps. They are not very accurate for this purpose!

Getting your vehicle ready, getting your Mexican auto insurance policy online, and getting a good road map of Mexico are three essential steps in planning your road trip to Mexico. Other than that, with a good Spanish dictionary and a great attitude you will be set to get out of town and get 'on the road' to Mexico!
