Police can ask for fine if the displayed board is not proper. Fines can be upto 1000. There is a British standard for colour and reflection of license plates. The displayed board should be of reflective material;front plate should be white rear plate ha to be yellow. On both the plates characters should be of black colours. Characters must be clearly visible from a distance.

In some cases, registered plate of vehicle is withdrawn and the vehicle with such improper plate will definitely fail in MOT test. MOT tests are conducted to evaluate that the road safety and environmental standards are followed properly. Therefore, make no attempt to disobey these rules related to a vehicles license plate.

One does not have to retain the number that was issued at the time of purchasing a vehicle. You can purchase a number of your choice from registered supplier or DVLA. It will be better if you search online for a registration number and then approach a supplier to complete paper works.

If ones vehicle already has a plate and the owner can sell it and purchase a separate plate as desired. It is possible to purchase a plate even if one does not have an insured or taxed vehicle. For that you will require a retention certificate.
