, religious and commercial importance. The history of Kanpur dates back to the period of the Mahabharata. According to the epic, Kanpur territory was gifted to Karna by Duryodhana. The city was earlier known as Karnapur, 'the land of Karna'. Later it came to be known as Kanpur.

City played a major role in the First War of Independence in 1857 and later in the freedom struggle in the first half of the twentieth century. Nana Sahib of Bithoor led the First War of Independence in Kanpur. It ended in the 'Massacre of Kanpur' or 'Bibighar Massacre'.

Kanpur has several cotton mills and leather tanning units. The city also boasts of some famous educational institutions like Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), Agriculture College, National Sugar Institute, Government Textile Institute and Indian Institute of Technology. Among the important tourist destinations in the city include Shri Radhakrishna Temple, Jain Glass Temple, Allen Forest Zoo, Moti Jheel Park, Gurudwara Banno Sahib, Green Park Stadium, Temple of Hanuman, Kamla Retreat, Nana Rao Park, Buddha Park and All Souls' Memorial Church.

The distance from Kanpur to Lucknow is about 80 km. Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh, was once the artistic capital of north India. The city is a renowned seat of Shia sect of Muslims. Lucknow, located on the banks of River Gomti, is an ancient city and has mentions in the epic Ramayana.

Lakshmanpur or Lakhanpur was the earlier name of Lucknow. According to mythology, this territory was gifted to Lakshmana by his elder brother Lord Rama. Lucknow is famous for the art forms like Kathak, Thumri, Khayal, Dadra, Qawalis, Ghazals and Shairi and chikan work clothes. Among the popular tourist destinations in Lucknow include Asafi Imambara (Bara Imambara), Chhota Imambara, British Residency, Shah Najaf, Rumi Darwaza, Sikandar Bagh, Lucknow Zoo and State Museum, Botanical Gardens and Kaiserbagh Palace complex.

Lucknow is well connected with Kanpur by rail and road. Since the distance from Kanpur to Lucknow is only 80 km, there is no question of travel by flight though both the cities have airports. Lucknow and Kanpur are important railway stations. There is a train from Kanpur to Lucknow in every half an hour. Besides express trains and some long distance passenger trains, regular local trains are available on this route.

The journey by road is also convenient. Besides the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation buses, private buses are also available from Kanpur to Lucknow. Shared taxi service is popular on Kanpur-Lucknow route. The rate for the shared taxi ranges from Rs.100 to Rs.200. On the other hand, taxi cabs charge a fare of Rs.1500 to Rs.2500 depending on the type of the vehicle the travellers hire.
