Road Main Transport Mode Kanyakumari To Rameshwaram

Kanyakumari, situated at the southern-tip of the Indian Peninsula

, is a tourist destination known for the unique and spectacular sunrise and sunset at the confluence of three ocean bodies of Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. Not less enchanting is to see the sunset and moonrise at the same time. But to view this spectacle, the travellers will have to be in Kanyakumari, also known as Cape Comorin, on the full-moon evenings.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial, another star attraction in Kanyakumari, was built in 1970 as a memory to Swami Vivekanand, who meditated on this rock for three days. A 133-ft statue of Tamil saint-poet Tiruvalluvar is situated on this rock, which is located some distance away from the mainland. The statue is considered to be one of the highest of its kind in Asia. Ferry service is available for the visitors to reach the Rock. The ride through the sea takes only a few minutes.

Among other tourist destinations in Kanyakumari include Kanyakumari Temple, Gandhi Memorial, Government Museum, Vattakottai and Udayagiri Forts, beaches, Padmanabhapuram Palace and St. Xavier Church.

The distance from Kanyakumari to Rameshwaram is about 325 km.

Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu is dotted with several majestic temples. Rameshwaram, situated at the extreme south-eastern corner of Indian peninsula, is a prominent religious city for both the Shaivite and Vaishnavaite pilgrims.

The temple city is located on Pamban Island in the Gulf of Mannar, which lies a short distance from the mainland of India. Pamban Bridge or Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge connects Pamban Island with the mainland. Pamban Island is about 40 km from the Munnar Island of Sri Lanka.

According to Hindu customs, a pilgrimage to Varanasi (Kashi) has to be followed by a trip to Rameshwaram. Rameshwaram island, which is conch-shaped, has an area of 62 sq. km. Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple occupies most of the area of the Island. Among other popular pilgrim centres include Gandamadana Parvatham, Dhanushkodi, Kothandaraswamy Temple, Erwadi and Adams Bridge.

Rameshwaram does not have its own airport. The temple city has a railway station. Only one direct train runs from Kanyakumari to Rameshwaram. Kanyakumari-Rameshwaram Express (No.12790) runs three days in a week on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays. The train leaves Kanyakumari at 10 in the night and reaches the destination at 5.20 in the morning. The train journey takes a little more than seven hours.

Both the places are well connected by road. State and private operators run regular bus services from Kanyakumari to Rameshwaram. The bus fare ranges from Rs.400 to Rs.1000 depending on the vehicle the travellers wish to use. The taxi cabs charge a fare of Rs.6000 to Rs.8000. The trip by road from Kanyakumari to Rameshwaram takes about seven hours.
