Optical Filter Glass: Colored Glass Filters & Common Uses

Optical colored glass filters have unique absorption properties in the visible wavelength range

. If the filter effect is found within the visible light spectrum, the optical filter appears to be colored and exhibits a distinctive ability to refract and bend light.

Colored glass filters are ideal for digital imaging and various industrial uses, and the thickness of the material will determine the number of wavelengths that will be absorbed. This makes it possible to only capture certain parts of the visible spectrum. As an illustration, a filter that is meant to absorb all light other than blue will produce images that only allow blue to pass through the optical filter.

How Colored Lenses Bend and Alter Light

Optical glass filters are often used to absorb certain spectral ranges and allow other colors to pass through the optical component. To effectively absorb these ranges, the optical grade filter glass must have uniform density, and the color must be distributed evenly over the surface. Colored filters absorb certain colors in the red, blue, and green portions of the visible spectrum. This enables those that use certain digital imaging tools to fine tune and balance the light sources in the tungsten-halogen microscope to produce certain digital effects in color films and imaging.


The Effects of Colored Filters on White Light

An optical filter prevents certain colors from passing through the lens by absorbing those colors and only allowing specific colors to be seen through the optical component. When using a blue filter, the filter will absorb the colors of red, orange, yellow, green and violet to allow only the visual effect of blue light. All of the colored filters operate to allow a specified color or combination of color components to pass through the filter.

Pure colored filters may be used to allow a single color to pass through the optical lens, but many colored filters overlap certain colors to allow several colors to be seen on the other side of the filter. Blue filters will allow a certain level of violet and green light to pass through as well, although the human eye will perceive the light to be blue only.

Common Uses of Colored Optical Lenses

As previously noted, colored filters are used in digital imaging applications to produce certain lighting effects in color films. Several types of colored filters exist, and these filters may also be used in airport lighting, laser safety, UV illumination, UV excitation in an effort to create visible luminescence, sterilization equipment, video equipment, eye sensitivity matching, surgical & dental lighting, and other industrial uses.
