Orchids and Growing Lights
Orchids have specific requirements such as the amount of light it's exposed to; it's watering and fertilizing cycles and the nourishment it receives
. Probably the most important factor to an orchids health is the type of light it has access to. Although it varies with different species, they do still require a decent amount of diffused light because orchids come from the tropical parts of the planet and are acclimatized to this. As the lush areas they originate from typically have defined patterns of sun and shade, the orchid is best placed in an eastern faced window in your home. This will help emulate the light and shade patterns it is used to.
Being the owner of an orchid means bearing the responsibility of figuring out the correct amounts of light and shade that your specific species requires to thrive " and this means finding as much information as possible that is relevant to your plant. I'm happy to say that you have many options to complete this task. Firstly, just talk to the people where you bought the plant. The internet is an invaluable research tool and will have plenty of sites with relevant information on orchids. Just type
"orchid growing tips" or
"caring for orchids" into a search engine and you should be shown plenty of results to start with. You will discover that there are certain pros and cons with light requirements for the many different kinds of orchids available, but don't let this deter you. For example, lots of sun will be preferred by some orchids, yet the preference of other species will be shade. Interestingly, there are just 2 ways to find out which orchids prefer the sun and which prefer the shade. The "soft growing" type prefers more shade and the "hard growing" type prefer more sun. Generally, owners of soft growing orchids will have a very healthy plant that will last longer but it will bloom less often and those flowers will be smaller. Conversely, owners of hard-growing orchids will have a smaller plant but with larger blooms and the leaves could tend to be yellow.
A great way to helping your orchid to achieve its goal of receiving the right amount of light each day is to introduce a grow-light into its regime. Incorporating a grow-light and timer into the maintenance of your orchid will guarantee it receives the preferred amount of both light and darkness for optimal growth. Using florescent light is another very good light source to consider because it won't be too strong for an orchid. The misconception for years has been that only experts can successfully grow and cultivate orchids but, in reality, all it takes is a good general knowledge of your specific orchid species, the right amount of light and shade, including a little artificial light, for even a novice to own a flourishing orchid plant.
