Other Health Risks Associated With Osa
Obstructive sleep apnea or OSA refers to a serious medical condition wherein a person gets affected when sleeping
. As a person sleeps, their throat rests. The condition is marked with an obstruction of air from going in or out of the sleeping individual. This may occur quite a lot of times a night. Snoring is another characteristic symptom of OSA, other than the cessation of breathing.
Apnea is associated with several kinds of risks. A failure of a treatment for this condition can result in various life-threatening complications. However, a suitable treatment can trim down these risks to a great extent.
Complications caused by untreated OSA
Some of the major problems are:
Hypertension Lack of breathing while sleeping during the night forces the body to correct the problem. The result of which is high blood pressure, or hypertension. With a rise, in the severity of apnea the chances of developing high blood pressure also increase.
Stroke - The person with obstructive sleep apnea has more chances to suffer from a stroke irrespective of whether he has hypertension or not.
Surgical problems - The person is also likely to suffer complications linked to the sedation from surgery as compared to those who don't have this disorder. The person may experience an increase in the chances of breathing termination and unexpected cardiac death due to the drug used to anesthetize them in surgery.
Fatigue - Disturbed breathing may prevent the person from getting a relaxing sleep, though the person may not actually feel this problem. With each occurrence of breathing cessation, there is an increase in the level of wakefulness of the affected person. As a result, the person is prevented from a peaceful sleep. The result is excessive day fatigue.
Liver Damage - A correlation has been found between OSA abnormal liver function. People suffering from sleep apnea are likely to have augmented liver enzymes. This is due to the lack of a good night's sleep as the body is never allowed to relax and digest, so people self-medicate themselves with sleeping aids, alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs. Regardless, these things will amplify liver enzymes.
Congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and cardiac illnesses, are some of the other problems linked the condition.
Treating sleep apnea
CPAP or Continuous positive airway pressure is perhaps the initial process in the treatment of a person detected with this condition. This treatment is extremely useful in exterminating the symptoms of sleep apnea. However, it comes with its own problems, for eg., the patient with sleep apnea finds it really difficult to wear a mask that is attached to an instrument while they are sleeping. Additionally, the mask may not fit suitably which may cause another problem for the person with OSA.
Obstructive sleep apnea patients have a tendency to develop problems that can later become lethal. However, with a suitable treatment of sleep apnea the chances of developing one or more of these problems may reduce.
