Other Producers Music

I am fortunate enough as a producer to be in a position where I am constantly hearing other peoples music

. I am signed with a publishing company that has a variety of other producers signed with them. I usually hear these beats and sometimes will write a song or chorus over there music. I also work closely with a couple other producers so I am constantly immersed in their music. This is great for me because not only does it let me hear what they are doing right and gather ideas but I also get to hear what they are doing wrong. I also got myself affiliated with websites such as RocBattle, and Soundclick and there is obviously an abundance of opportunities to listen to and critique beats on these websites. I feel like there are two types of aspiring producers. Producers who have great ideas within their beats but smother the good ideas with whack ones and poor engineering, and producers who know how to make their music sound real professional but their music is boring as hell.

Soundclick and RocBattle producers can fall into both categories. The vast majority of both are just terrible, that being said there is some talent. Yet within this talent I have found very few producers that have made me say wow! In general the good beats on Soundclick and Rockbattle are beats with good ideas in them sprinkled with a bunch of crap.

The majority of tracks that I hear from other producers who are legitimately trying to get their music placed are extremely well put together. The musical ideas are solid, they are engineered well, sound professional, and sound like they could have a good song written over them. The only problem I have with them is that they lack a soul. Peoples beats all sound the same to me and they all lack originality. Yes the tracks could potentially get place on an album but when you build beats like that how are you going to separate yourself from everybody else? There is a reason that Timbaland, The Neptunes and Kanye West all reached superstar status. Not only are all three insane producers but they all have a distinct style. Timbaland uses the most unique obscure sounds with intense rhythmic syncopation. The Neptunes have the best chord progressions, coming up with chords that sound simple yet are unique to The Neptunes sound. Kanye is just Kanye, hes evolved so much as a producer you cant really put a label on him.

In conclusion even when people impress me with their music I would in most cases never put it in my CD player. This is even mostly true for the majority of album cuts. I am finding that I am becoming very particular about the popular music that I listen to. Despite what people say the people who become superstars become superstars for a reason.
