Ottomans - A Footstool By Any Other Name

Ottomans were introduced to 18th century Europe, and the legend surrounding their name suggests that they were so called because they looked like the hats that the men from the 'ottoman empire' used to wear. Over the years they've been adapted, changed, altered and updated, to become the furniture we know and love.

Why an Ottoman?

All things being equal, why would someone choose an ottoman over a footstool? Honestly, if you're being sold a larger footstool as an ottoman, it's still a footstool. Ottomans are traditionally larger than their 'French cousins' (where the modern footstool traces most of its lineage to) so can be used better as a storage product, or can be used as a piece of furniture in a bedroom - usually at the bottom of a bed, or in a dressing room as part bench, part storage (if it's hollow). Many people use ottomans instead of blanket chests, or convert blanket chests to partial ottomans by placing a cushion onto the lid and securing it there.

Having an Ottoman in your living room is a slightly more complex affair - it's often too big to be 'stowed' under another chair (unless your couch has a special design) so can be used as a table, or side to one of your chairs. When designed well, it can blend with your sofa suite, even if you didn't order it as a part of it in the first place.

Ottomans come in several designs, low and higher, on or off feet, with or without wheels. What makes them stand out from other storage options is they are often fabric covered and designed to fit in with your d?cor. Doing so may mean choosing colours to match wallpaper, or bedding, or your suite. Many companies offer the ability to design or produce your own ottoman, based on either a choice of fabrics they have or allow you to send some of the fabric you have used to upholster your own furniture with - this can often be a good choice if you're reupholstering your own furniture already - you can have the material on hand to send and it will mean you're guaranteed a match. You can also reupholster ottomans when they're in need of it - something which isn't as easy to do with wicker chests and the like that people use in their rooms for storage. All in all, ottomans are a great product with lots of potential.
