Our Human Bodies

Historically, Christians have emphasized the soul

. The soul is important. And the soul is important; the soul is eternal. But weve so emphasized the soul that weve neglected the teaching from scripture, from the word of God, concerning our bodies. I have some shocking news for you today. In fact, its news that might rattle your cage. God, thats right, our God, loves you and loves me so much, that He is concerned in fact Hes more concerned than any of us can ever imagine about our human bodies.

I want you now to take out your scripture card, because I want to give you five demonstrations of Gods concern for our bodies. Five theological truths concerning the importance of your body and my body. The first demonstration of Gods concern takes us all the way back to the book of Genesis. When God created the heavens and the earth, he spoke, He commanded things into existence. He said, Let there be light, and there was light. Let there be sun, moon, stars, animals, fish.

We come, though, to Genesis 2:7, and its almost as though God says, Im really going to get involved now. It says, Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being. In other words, God took the dust in His own fingers, in His own hands, and He custom-designed, He tailor-made, man. The Bible says, later, that God made woman. I personally think that man was sort of the rough draft, and woman was the upgraded model, but thats a personal opinion of mine. Think about the fact that youre unique, that youre handmade, that youre custom-made by the living Lord. The first demonstration of Gods concern for our bodies is the fact that He fashioned them Himself. He breathed life into them.

A couple of weeks ago, Lisa and I found out some shocking news: that we are expecting twins. She captured this moment, when she told me, on video. She set this camera up in my office and she invited me in. I walked into the office and she said, Ed, would you please sit down? I said, Sure. I sat down and she pulled, out of her purse, a picture. A little sonogram picture. She put it in front of me and said, Ed, were pregnant. Ed Young Elevate stated that there is baby A. I said, Great! Ive always wanted to have another child! Three! Then she pulls out another sonagram picture, and she goes, Here is baby B. She is over three months along, and you can already see the arms and things moving back and forth. I thought about Gods handiwork. The transcendent God making life, making human beings. That makes us special.
