The first thing that you need to do, if you have children ,is to instruct them about fire safety.Let them know that touching the fire is dangerous and to stay a certain distance away for their own safety.Even the outer shell of the fire pit is going to be hot, which a child needs to know.

There are fire pits that burn wood and some that burn natural gas.When you get natural gas connected, you need to have a professional make sure that it is connected properly without any leaks.At times, the heat can cause the natural gas connection to fail and leak.It is a good idea to check the connection from time to time to make sure no gas is leaking, which could be dangerous.

Some fire pits have covers.These can help you stay safer.First of all ,the logs will not be able to roll out as easily and catch other things around it on fire.Secondly, curious pets and children will stay away from the flames a bit more.

Make sure you build a reasonable sized fire so that there is not a chance of it spreading.As wood burns, it cracks and breaks.Sometimes this causes the logs to roll out of the fire pit if you make it too big.Always watch the fire at all times to prevent this from happening.If the fire pit is on concrete, this will help you stay even more safe.

There are certain treated woods and plastics that can give off toxic fumes.Make sure you know that the substance you are burning is safe, just in case.
